Ciao a tutti. Hello friends.
I'm back from a week with my oldest, my daughter, Heather.
To have her home, if even for a short time, is a blessing I always look forward to and thoroughly enjoy. It awakens the (adult) child in me, with an excitement liking the unwrapping of a present under a Christmas tree! That admission may sound a bit silly, but she lives in Oakland and I see her only a few times a year; so truly, each time is a present.
She arrived on Southwest, via empty airports – ghost towns: no lines, no waiting. Traveling inside a sterile plane, wearing a mask, gloves, and passengers seated in every other seat. Precautions. Traveling: how ordinary that would have been a couple of months ago. How altered and disconcerting it is today.
Like you, we passed many hours conversing about the impact covid has had on our lives. As a Fine Wine Specialist, introducing and selling fine wines to restaurants, she is on furlough; no job. Her boyfriend too, has lost his position as a Sommelier. The restaurant world, which has taken a huge hit, may never be the same, impacting both of them and so many others; how will restaurants operate when the world does “open?”
But yet…our time together was fun, exhilarating and filled with love!
We shared many memories of childhood, family, friends and life; even if not all happy. We spent hours going through boxes and drawers of old family photos…remember when? Examining long forgotten treasures stored away, brought smiles, laughter and tears, to our hearts and faces! We cooked, baked, tasted and enjoyed wines together, something we rarely get to do. She even made her first batch of cantucci, the Italian cookie that is referred to as “biscotti” here in the states. Oh, and they were deliziosi!
Our time together was surely a gift, for it gave us precious moments to spend together heart to heart, time that distance can prevent, and normal throngs of daily life make unattainable. It was pure rejuvenation, a “silver” lining around the black cloud surrounding us all, called covid-19.
May you find your “silver” lining, too.
