What happens when you bet on the beavers?
UW Bothell alumnus Dash Paulson spent two years finding out.
“Betting on the Beavers” follows the research Dash began as a student in our restored campus wetland, exploring how beavers reshape streams, reconnect floodplains and create habitat for wildlife. Today, Dash works as a wetland biologist.
Along the way, the film brings together students, faculty, environmental experts and community partners to tell the story of an ecosystem at work right here at UW Bothell.

“Road runoff goes straight down the drain and into whatever the nearest body of water is — whether it be a creek, a wetland or the Puget Sound," Dr. Lizbeth Seebacher said. "But often, it pools in stormwater ponds on its way there. I hadn’t realized it before, but there really is no treatment going on in stormwater ponds.

“And that was a big awakening.”

From its research projects to events and learning programs, the University of Washington Bothell’s Collaborative for Socio-Ecological Engagement has grown its offerings considerably since it launched in 2024. And at the heart of this work — the engine that has supported this expansion along the way — is its internship program.

This summer, CoSEE welcomed its largest cohort to date with 22 interns working along five pathways: geographic information systems, invasive species, native plants, environmental education and communications.

What if grief could make room for joy, connection and even celebration?
That question is at the heart of “Grief Rituals,” a nine-month artistic project led by UW Bothell associate professor Dr. Naomi Macalalad Bragin and co-artistic director Milvia Pacheco Salvatierra.
Through dance, storytelling and performance, they and UW Bothell students are exploring grief associated with migration and how experiencing it together can create space for healing.
This Saturday, the project takes to the streets with a five-hour performance procession from Seattle’s Chinatown International District to the waterfront.
