A new South Korea study abroad program co-led by Dr. Jong Yoon, professor in the Department of Engineering & Mathematics, took UW students to Yoon’s home country, where they learned about engineering and Korean culture and collaborated with students from Korean institutions to address real-world issues.

The 12-credit program featured three courses, where students participated in design challenges for a greenhouse watermelon farm, jumped at the opportunity to create an automatic film roller, learned about AI models for electrical vehicle charging, explored renewable energy innovations in Jeju Island and immersed themselves in Korean culture along the way.

Brenda Sugey Vega Contreras came to UW Bothell looking for a way to transition from biomedical engineering to software engineering without starting over with a second bachelor's degree.

She found that opportunity through the Graduate Certificate in Software Design & Development, which equipped her with the skills and confidence to continue toward a master’s degree and ultimately launch her career as a software engineer at Microsoft.

“It was the starting point for my career in software engineering,” she said.

We are honored to be guided by an exceptional group of industry and community leaders who are committed to advancing STEM education and strengthening our regional workforce.

Our board is excited to serve our community. From providing mentorship and fostering employer partnerships to expanding industry engagement and workforce development opportunities, they are helping ensure STEM students are equipped with the skills, experiences and connections they need to succeed in their careers.

Their leadership will create opportunities for mentorship, sponsored projects, employer collaborations and direct talent pipelines that will help us lead the region in developing an innovative STEM workforce.

Meet Samantha Szeki Boggs, one of our 2026 Husky 100 honorees!

As an Electrical Engineering major, Boggs was drawn to the field for its emphasis on hands-on work and problem solving. When her family built a shop in their backyard, she took the opportunity to shadow her father on electrical projects, learning skills ranging from calculating electrical continuity to stripping wires.

“These experiences led me to look forward to Electric Circuits Lab and Power System Fundamentals classes,” she said. “With the knowledge I’m gaining in my classes, I can see an abundance of possibility in applying it to projects I’m interested in, such as innovating recreational dance floors using renewable energy to fuel speakers.”

As a child, Bruno Marroquin (CSSE: IAC ‘26) played video games and built computers with his brothers, sparking an interest in how software can be used to build tools to help people.

Growing up deaf, Marroquin used cochlear implants to help him hear but was not surrounded by a Deaf community. Curious about the technology that made hearing possible for him, he wanted to learn how software can be used to build tools that improve lives.

His family helped him learn to communicate, and Bruno taught himself to read lips, body language and facial expressions. After he first attended school with hearing students, he continued finding new ways to learn and developed strategies that worked best for him.

“I had never met another deaf student like me after moving to the United States, so I learned to become independent and develop these skills on my own,” he said. “They made learning easier and helped me continue my education with confidence and never gave up.”

He hopes his story encourages other deaf students and students with disabilities to pursue their goals and see themselves in engineering and technology fields.

Just like that, summer has come to an end, and we finished the quarter with another STEM Symposium showcasing our students’ research!

Research this quarter featured projects ranging from embedded Linux development for Genie aerial lifts and the role of pulsars in detecting gravitational waves to reflections on internship experiences with AT&T and Amazon.

Congratulations to all who presented, and thank you to our industry sponsors, students, faculty, staff and community whose support helps make this event a success every quarter.

We are proud to recognize three outstanding faculty members who are retiring this year!

We're excited to celebrate the retirements of:

Dr. Harry Aintablian, associate teaching professor emeritus, Department of Engineering & Mathematics, after 11 years. Dr. Aintablian taught power electronics and renewable energy electrical and electronic systems. Using his experience in the aerospace industry – including roles at NASA and Boeing – he brought real-world insight and practical perspectives to students. In retirement, he plans to continue hiking and traveling overseas and hopes to pursue photography while continuing to teach part time in the Electrical Engineering program.

Dr. Dan Jaffe, professor, Department of Physical Sciences, after nearly 30 years. Dr. Jaffe has is a leader in air quality research, writing many peer-reviewed publications with students. He was also one of the key faculty members involved in the formation of the school in 2013 and served as chair of the Department of Physical Sciences for about nine years. As professor emeritus, he plans to focus on grant-funded research projects while also making more time for travel and skiing.

Dr. David Sommerfeld, associate teaching professor, Department of Physical Sciences, after nearly 12 years. Dr. Sommerfeld has inspired students through chemistry lectures and labs while helping to lead the Chemistry program. He plans to move out of state and get involved with science education and museum work.
