Smiles & Splits!

Doing a split is hard work...it takes a lot of time and the younger you are the easier it is to train.

The key though is in smiling. Everytime your child pushes one inch more, they feel soreness from muscles and ligaments stretching.

This is where it is important to make things fun, exciting and challenging.

Split and Smile 😁

Handstands are more than a cool skill.

They build upper body strength, core control, shoulder stability, balance and posture all while teaching the brain to understand movement upside down.

For kids, this builds confidence, focus, patience and the courage to keep trying even when they fall.

Strength. Balance. Control. Mindset.

That is why we train handstands.

I wrote this post on 1 June 2013.
Now in 2026 its real.

At the time, teaching karate was still the dream I had put on hold.

I came to Australia with a vision in 2012, but I had no idea it would take 14 years to finally build it.

From being underpaid in hospitality jobs just to survive, to spending years in the corporate world working for large Australian and American tech companies.

From teaching in large dojos, to teaching in my backyard like Mr Miyagi, never letting go of what I truly wanted to create.

From major back and knee injuries, operations and years of rehabilitation, to learning how to push forward despite physical limitations.

From financial pressure and life circumstances that kept delaying the dream, to finally reaching a point where my family and I could bring it to life.

I never gave up.
I never stopped believing.
I never accepted that this dream was over.

Today, we live and breathe KJ Arts Centre.

This is not just a business. It is the vision I carried with me to Australia all those years ago, finally becoming real.

Come and see how we are different from the rest.

A handstand does not begin upside down. πŸ’ͺ

Before children attempt a handstand, they need to develop the foundations:
upper body strength, core control, balance, coordination and the confidence to support their own body weight.

In class, we break difficult skills into safe, achievable steps.

These basic exercises help our students prepare their bodies, understand movement, and keep trying until they improve.

At KJ Arts Centre, training is more than kicks and punches. We help children build strong bodies, focused minds and real confidence through karate, calisthenics and functional movement.

Build Confidence. Master Spirit.

These days I often hear people talk down πŸ‘Ž Karate.

The assumption is that its all point fighting and ineffective.

Why?

This is because the UFC and the MMA cult have decided to shun a martial art that is most commonly poorly taught.

Thats right. In my opinion 90% of karate classes are Mcdojos.

They just want to pay the rent. So customers get their families to join for the certificates, belts and medals.

However this video showcases Chinto Machida, Lyoto Machida brother who arguably floored the MMA cult with real Karate.

I teach and train real Karate.
If you want to learn the difference, come and give it a trial.

My daughter is showing her understanding of Yori Ashi.

Yori Ashi is one of the most important footwork techniques in Japanese martial arts, especially in Karate and Kendo.

It is a sliding movement where you push from the rear leg, glide the front foot forward, then instantly bring the back leg up to keep your stance strong and balanced.

Simple, but powerful.

This type of footwork helps students learn how to move their centre of gravity, get out of danger, close distance, and counter with control.

A lot of people admire Lyoto Machida in the UFC, and one of the reasons his movement was so effective was his use of simple, clean footwork like this.

This is the foundation for real kumite / sparring training.

At KJ Arts Centre, we don’t just teach kids to punch and kick. We teach them how to move, think, react, and control their body.
