As Boston Public Schools celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month between September 15 and October 15, we are proud to highlight the accomplishments of educator and author Yolanda Depalo, whose new bilingual children’s book is creating meaningful connections with students through language, culture, and the power of shared experiences.

The Albert Holland School of Technology ESL and Spanish teacher published “Nuestro Árbol de Tamarindo /Our Tamarind Tree" in May 2026. Written in both Spanish and English under her pen name, Yolanda Montás, the heartfelt story draws on her childhood memories growing up in the Dominican Republic, and students have reacted to the book with enthusiasm during her classroom visits and readings across BPS.

The Otis Elementary School learning environment is healthier and more-comfortable than ever!

The City of Boston and Boston Public Schools are celebrating the completion of major building upgrades at the James Otis Elementary School in East Boston. The retrofit improves classroom comfort and indoor air quality, supports student health and learning, and reduces the school’s carbon emissions. Renew Boston Trust and Massachusetts Clean Energy Center Green School Works program made the upgrades possible

This first-of-its-kind BPS project makes the Otis the first BPS school to transition their entire facility through renovations to 100% clean energy, demonstrating what’s possible when we invest in healthier, more sustainable schools – especially in environmental justice communities.

We’re proud to celebrate this milestone with Governor Maura Healey Maura Healey, Mayor Michelle Wu 吳弭 BPS Superintendent Mary Skipper, school leaders, students and community partners!

This week, as Success Boston and Boston Public Schools celebrate the 20th year of College & Career Month, we’re encouraging students to connect their skills and interests to possibilities for the future.

There is no single “right” path after high school, and you don’t need to have everything figured out today. Exploring what interests you can help you discover colleges, training programs and careers you may never have considered.

Start with what you know about yourself. Ask questions. Explore what’s possible. Your path doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

Boston Public Schools was proud to welcome Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho of Cabo Verde to Lilla G. Frederick Elementary School on Monday, September 28, for a celebration of the school’s new Kriolu dual-language program!

The visit brought together BPS leaders, educators, students, families, and Cabo Verdean community leaders to celebrate the importance of language, culture, and belonging in our schools.

The program welcomed its first class of K1 students last month, representing an important investment in multilingual education and community partnership. Students will learn through both English and Kriolu, with the program planned to expand grade by grade toward a K1–Grade 6 dual-language pathway.

Friday, October 2, is National Custodian Day and School Custodian Appreciation Day.

It’s time to recognize the dedicated professionals who help make our schools clean, safe, welcoming places to learn and work.

One of the many outstanding Boston Public Schools custodians who embodies this commitment is Miguel Diaz, Day Senior Custodian at Mildred Avenue K-8 School.

Miguel leads a team of one during the day and five custodians at night, working together to ensure that Mildred Avenue K-8 is ready to welcome students and staff each day.

"I do this important work so kids can have a welcoming and safe environment to come to school," Diaz told BPS Communications in August. "Kids learn more when the environment is safe, clean and organized. That's why I do it."

Thank you, Miguel, and thank you to all of our Boston Public Schools custodians for the care, dedication and expertise you bring to our school communities. We are grateful for all that you do!
