Four notes bunched inside an octave sound thick and muddy. Drop 2 is the single move that opens them out.
Take the second voice from the top and drop it an octave. That is the whole technique. Nothing is added, nothing is removed, and the chord stops fighting itself.
It works on every seventh chord - major, minor, dominant, half diminished, diminished - so one piece of technique unlocks the whole vocabulary in all twelve keys.

Five notes, three perfect fourths and one major third on top.

On Dm7 that gives you D G C F A: 1, 11, b7, b3 and 5. Every note of the chord is in there, so the voicing stands up without a bass player, and the 11th is the only addition.

Piled up in thirds the same five notes are an ordinary minor 7th with an 11th added. Rebuilt in fourths they spread across both hands and stop sounding like a chord symbol.

In "So What" the A sections sit in D dorian and the bridge moves the whole shape up a half step. Nothing is re-voiced: every interval stays exactly where it was.

Now you can play your answer.
Earonman has always let you sing it instead of tapping. This update adds the third way in: connect a MIDI keyboard and play the note.
USB keyboards just work. Bluetooth ones pair inside the app, which matters more than it sounds: an iPhone will not list a Bluetooth MIDI keyboard in its own Bluetooth settings, so Guido, Harmonic Quest and Jazz Voicings open Apple's pairing window for you and the keyboard turns up on its own.
Guido's song practice takes your voice now too, not just your taps.
And the course itself got sharper. Translating every lesson into four more languages meant reading each sentence closely enough to rewrite it, and sixteen real teaching errors turned up in the English original. Every correction landed in all five languages at once.

Your ears worked overtime this week.
Monday you followed a bassline all the way through a record. Tuesday you chased two notes - thirds and sevenths - through Autumn Leaves. Wednesday you finally decoded the So What voicing: three fourths and a third on top.

Tuesday's challenge over on Threads: follow the 3rds and 7ths through one chorus of Autumn Leaves, ears only. If you lost the thread halfway through, you're in good company - and there's a structured way to build that skill.

Pop quiz for your ears. If I play a natural minor scale and then Dorian, can you point to the note that changed? Mixolydian next to plain major?
It's one note each time. Hearing that one note is the difference between guessing what a tune is doing and knowing.

Honest question for everyone here. 🎧
What is the one sound you still cannot reliably hear by ear?
For a lot of people it is the tritone. For others it is telling a major 7 from a dominant 7, or hearing the difference between a minor 7 and a half-diminished. Everybody has a blind spot - even players with great ears.

Earonman speaks Czech, Spanish, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. It follows your phone's language, and Settings has a picker for everyone.
The course grew to 251 levels. New bridge levels smooth out the steepest jumps in the climb.
Failed and abandoned runs now count toward your stats and streak, and a daily Tune-up gives you a free review of what you've actually gotten wrong.
