America’s Teachers Aren’t Burned Out. We Are Demoralized. - EdSurge News 02/16/2022

A must read. Captures the realities of teachers everywhere.

“Teachers are forced to work in systems that aren’t functioning properly which makes teachers feel demoralized, discouraged and overwhelmed…We love teaching, we love students… [but] our love for our students is regularly abused.

“Right now educators will continue to leave in record numbers. Teachers will either leave silently or will leave fighting. We will be thanked for our servic and left to rebuild our professional lives”

This is the very reality at EF Boston. A mass exodus of educators who can no longer ignore the inequity, injustice, and hypocrisy of the company’s policies, and treatment of teachers and students.

It’s time for EF to start putting education first!

The Teachers and Students at EF Boston are working together to make EF better!
And we need YOUR HELP!!

Wages here at EF Boston are so appallingly low that the Company can’t retain or hire enough teachers for all our students. Consequently, there are entire classes with NO TEACHER. Students are given “Independent Study” - a euphemism for teach yourself alone in your dorm room - when they’ve paid thousands of dollars for instruction in a classroom with a teacher!

This is unacceptable! Teachers deserve a living wage! Students deserve the classes they paid for! We, the Boston Teachers, emailed EF Management a letter that we all signed, outlining the problems and the solution but they didn’t reply.

We need your HELP!! There are 3 ways you can support teachers and students:
1. Read our letter to EF Management
2. Email EF Vice President of Operations in support of a living wage for teachers (email: [email protected])
3. Share widely on social media!

Together we can make EF better!

FULL TEXT of Letter to EF Management:

Dear Christian,

We are writing on behalf of our hundreds of students who have travelled to Boston from every corner of the earth during a pandemic for face-to-face classes, yet who now sit in online Zoom classes with 40-60 other students because EF cannot retain or hire teachers.

We are writing you on behalf of EF’s hundreds of customers who have left their home countries and paid thousands of dollars to learn English in a classroom with an instructor, yet who now teach themselves in a dorm room 4 out of 10 blocks a week because of EF’s failure to properly staff the school.

We love teaching here, but EF’s wages are so appallingly low that teachers cannot afford to keep working for this company. Teachers are leaving by the droves and new teachers are not coming in, yet EF continues to sell English programs for which it has no teachers.

EF can fix this NOW.
EF can do right by its customers NOW.
EF can start paying teachers a living wage NOW.
EF can choose to save EF Boston NOW.

We love this school, and it is breaking our hearts to see what is happening here.

There is still time to turn this ship around, to save this school, to do right by our customers, to view and treat teachers like human beings, and to regain our reputation as the leader in the field of language learning.

The solution is simple: pay the teachers a living wage, so that EF can hire and retain teachers and deliver the product it is selling to its customers.

Yours sincerely,
The Teachers of EF Boston
