I was so delighted to get to share preliminary data from our NIH R01 at Society for the Scientific Study of Reading (SSSR). We are looking into phonological profiles of children with speech sound disorders. This is a very preliminary latent profile analysis from year 1, but very exciting to see consistent and distinct profiles at the beginning and end of one school year!

Do you ever wonder what academic researchers do with their summers "off"? I am a 9-month employee and am currently "off contract". This means that my time is essentially my own and I do not teach in the summers and am not currently in an administrative role in my department. My contract begins again August 10, 2026. However, my summer is chocked full of work-related responsibilities that cannot wait until fall or until contracts start again. I am very grateful for the time and flexibility that I do have, which often includes some fantastic travel opportunities. But the summer is never really "off". Here are a few things that occupy (or have occupied) my summer time. Besides teaching, what would you add to this list? I think it's important to talk about, especially to prepare future tenure-track faculty for what to expect during this season.

I often say that I am lucky because I can "work wherever I want"; but when you can work wherever you want, it is hard to really take time away from work. Note that there are many, many variations of what this does and can look like. Contracts may be 9, 10, or 12 months. Many faculty teach over the summer. Some faculty have a grant that can pay them extra salary over the summer. Some people have higher or lower research expectations. Everyone has family obligations. Everyone deserves rest. I am very thankful for the work that I get to do and always am interested in what things look like "on the inside" of people's realities. I hope this is helpful! What other questions do you have?

Travel to a beautiful resort + time with old friends + meeting new friends + an impeccably orchestrated event = Bjorem Desert Days!!

I had so much fun and am a very proud author!! So very thankful for this experience and, as always, completely blown away by how Bjorem pulls an event together. The details were 🤌 and I will remember that breakfast spread fondly 😁😆

There has been so much to celebrate in the lab this week!!! Congratulations to and for their successful thesis defenses!! I am always blown away by the incredible students I get to work with, but these two have leveled up my undergraduate thesis bar! SO PROUD of you both!!!

It has been a BUSY week in the CLaSS lab!! I am thrilled that two doctoral candidates had their dissertation ideas approved by their committees this week! I can't wait to see the outcomes of these projects.
