Most Japanese learners set yearly goals in January.
By February, life happens and it falls apart.
It’s not your fault.
The learning strategies we used full-time in school don’t transfer into part-time adulthood learning.
That’s why I’m hosting a free 12 Week Learning Plan workshop this Saturday for Japanese Circle members.
Non-members can join with a 30-day membership for $1…but that offer ends Saturday.
In one hour, you’ll:
→ Get clear on your actual “why”
→ Set specific 12-week targets
→ Build a weekly study architecture that fits your life
→ Anticipate what will derail you, before it does
You’ll leave with a concrete plan, not just motivation.
Can’t make it live? Members get one-week recording access.

You already know how to study Japanese. You just need a reason to show up.
We built JapaneseCircle after talking with 100+ learners who had the same problem: they knew what to do, but couldn’t stay consistent on their own.
So we created a structured accountability cohort i.e. not another course.
What you get: → 12-week learning framework → Weekly accountability check-ins → Pomodoro-style focus rooms → Group study drills → 50+ members who actually show up
🎍 New Years Special: Start for $1 Cohort launches January 10. Space limited.

JLPT is on Sunday. During this week's deep-focus sessions, we shared tales of past failures.
I wanted to share the top 10 takeaways here. I hadn't considered #2 before, but it's an important one.
1. Bring an analogue watch. Don’t assume there’s a clock or a five‑minute warning.
2. Check your eyewear. Make sure you can read smaller furigana.
3. Guess, never leave blanks. Incorrect answers don’t cost points.
4. Do one timed practice. Don’t walk in without a time budget.
5. Know the directions. Skim question types now; don’t waste test time reading them.
6. Follow local rules. Some sites allow water bottles; others don’t.
7. Over‑pack pencils. You can’t bring too many sharp 2Bs or lead.
8. Use two clean erasers. Don’t rely on the eraser on your pencil.
9. Pack JLPT test voucher + valid ID. Obvious, but easy to forget.
10. Dress in layers. Adjust once you know the room's temperature.
I'll drop a downloadable copy in the comments below for test takers to grab and go.

The US deadline to apply for the JET Program is November 14.
That's why we're hosting a free-form Q&A for prospective JETs. Boston Intercultural founder Daniel Lowe will share what he learned as a former JET, former USA country rep representing 35,000+ U.S. JET alumni, former chapter rep, and as someone who has interviewed 120+ JET candidates.
Most importantly, he'll answer questions that matter most to you: placements, first‑30‑days, classroom life, policies, special cases, and careers after JET. We’ll start with a few common questions to warm things up, then go wherever you need most.
Disclaimer: To protect the integrity of the selection process, we're unable to discuss interviews, the selection process, or any other confidential materials. We’ll discuss public information only, and focus on how to get the most out of the program.

The Japanese Learning Success Formula
When I first learned Japanese in college, my professors provided a structured approach: a syllabus outlined what to study and when, and a healthy dose of competition kept me motivated.
But moving to Japan on the Japan Exchange & Teaching Program stripped away that scaffolding. I turned to the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) for direction and ego for motivation, yet progress stalled.
Japanese tutors and classes helped, but I found that meeting once a week back-loaded all of my study (i.e., cramming the night before).
Only after returning to the U.S. did I piece together a system that significantly improved my vocabulary, grammar, reading, kanji, and listening skills, and even enhanced my speaking and writing abilities.
The Japanese Success Equation
Success = (Daily Consistency × Active Learning × Community Support) ÷ (Time × Friction)
In the real world, this equation translates to showing up every day, even for just 5 minutes, engaging deeply with the language, and sharing with a supportive community, all while minimizing time wasted and reducing friction.
That formula worked: I passed the JLPT N2 a year after leaving Japan, and my speaking and writing skills improved despite not being formally tested. It’s this success that led me to launch JETs Who Get Things Done five years ago, our 700‑member accountability community, where members posted daily wins for shout‑outs. It demonstrated the robustness of structured accountability.
Drum roll…
Now I’m thrilled to launch the Japanese Active Learning Circle, a dedicated space built on the equation above, open to all!
Members will…
- Post daily in as little as five minutes to build consistency, because daily action compounds quickly.
- Share what they’ve learned to convert passive exposure into active mastery.
- Respond to each other’s posts to cultivate a supportive community; connection increases the perceived likelihood of success.
- Establish short, automatic habits to facilitate progress with less friction.
To ensure a high‑touch experience, we’re starting with a Founding Member cohort capped at just 30 seats.
Founding Member Benefits
- Receive a discount code for your first month, so you can try it risk-free for 30 days at $0.
- $30 credit toward your second month, to encourage consistency. For each daily post missed, $1 disappears from the credit. You now get the model 😉
- Monthly calls to help build an established community
- Early, discounted access to our virtual flow coworker sessions, so you have synchronous accountability when they launch.
- Early, discounted entry to multi‑week challenges aligned with the Japanese Success Equation.
- Exclusive Founding Member space with behind‑the‑scenes sneak peeks at what’s coming (hint: it’s a lot)
- Limited seats: only a select few will enjoy these perks before we expand.
This offer will be gone forever this Saturday, or until registration reaches 30 people, whichever comes first. I’ll also be sharing on my other platforms.
It has taken hundreds of books, dozens of interviews, and a substantial financial investment to bring this project to fruition. I’m that confident this process works.
If you’re ready to follow a proven formula, get daily accountability, and join a supportive community, grab your spot now. The first cohort will set the tone for hundreds to come, and I’d love for you, or someone you know, to be part of it!
