The Film/Video Major is committed to redefining what it means to be an artist working with the moving image. Our students are consistently challenged to create new forms of viewing experiences that are personal, conceptual, abstract, political, visceral and visionary. The Mass Art Film/Video Major is unique in that our majors start to make their own work in their sophomore year developing skills a
nd resources to work both individually and in collaboration with their peers. During the three years of our major they learn all aspects of production, from directing to editing and they experiment with the expanded platforms of digital media. We encourage our majors to develop their unique personal voice and vision; we provide the conceptual and technical foundation for a practice as a professional artist or a media professional. Our small class sizes facilitate one-on-one contact between faculty and students. Throughout the major, students are exposed to a wide range of historical works and to contemporary discourse on media theory and practice. Our curriculum helps Film/Video majors develop an intimate understanding of their own imaginations. In addition to the broad range of courses we offer, the longstanding Mass Art Film Society, a renowned screening series started in the late 1970’s by professor Saul Levine, provides weekly screenings of a wide range of films and videos, and is often followed by a live discussion with the artist. Students work across media formats, shooting primarily in 16mm film and High Definition video. Our facilities include: a Black box film studio with lighting and grip equipment, a Chroma key studio, a Black box video studio with multi-camera and audio switching, High Definition post-production studios using Avid Media Composer and Adobe Suite and stations with Final Cut Pro, two sound recording and mixing rooms, equipped with software for authoring surround sound. Being a Film/Video maker in an art school requires students to be innovators. After graduating, our alums continue to make their own independent video and film projects; direct and program film festivals; work for other artists as editors and production assistants; work in the film industry as cinematographers, gaffers, editors and production assistants and continue their studies in top-ranking graduate programs. Mass Art Film/Video alums have gone to become award-winning filmmakers and video artists and head production departments in New York, Los Angeles and Boston. Our students are consistently challenged to create new forms of viewing experiences that are personal, political, conceptual, abstract, visceral and visionary. The Mass Art Film/Video program is unique because students focus on finding their own voices while learning the most up-to-date equipment and technology and choosing internships with local production companies.
