When and Where: Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 4:30-6:00pm in C101 MCB.

The Education Department invites you to hear from past Simmons students who are currently teaching. Some graduated just last year and others as far back as 2002.

All are passionate about their careers as teachers and their Simmons experience as undergraduate Dunn Scholars in the accelerated 4+1 degree in education.

Come and meet them! They can’t wait to come back to campus and to share with you. (At least come and listen while you enjoy some pizza. You have to eat, right?)

Information about the 5-year BA plus graduate degree programs in SPED, Secondary Education, Elementary, or English as a Second Language will be available.

Congratulations to Psychology major Jessica Brandano ('14) who recently co-authored a conference poster on "Full Catastrophe Working: Clinicians' Recognition and Management of Emotions During Difficult Healthcare Conversations".

The conference was held at the Dr. M. Judah Folkman Research Day, Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School on May 14, 2014. This work has also been accepted at the European Association of Communication in Healthcare (EACH) to be held in Amsterdam in September 2014.

Jessica worked on these projects as part of her psychology fieldwork internship (http://www.simmons.edu/undergraduate/academics/departments/psychology/detail.php?courseID=PSYC_380) with the Institute for Professionalism and Ethical Practice (http://www.ipepweb.org) at Boston Children's Hospital.

Position: Psychology Research Assistant

Project: Study of Work and Family Functioning in Veterans

Job Description: Seeking a full-time Research Assistant to provide assistance with a longitudinal survey study of work and family functioning in veterans, as well as other related research studies on stress/trauma exposure and its impact on PTSD and other mental health outcomes. With supervision from the Principal Investigators and Project Coordinator, this individual will be involved in many tasks associated with study preparation, implementation, and dissemination of study findings. Duties will include, but not be limited to, the following: conducting and maintaining background literature searches, organizing study files and data, providing administrative and technical support for research objectives, assisting in the preparation of research findings in the form of manuscripts and conference presentations and assisting in the preparation of grant applications and IRB submissions. Annual salary for a full-time bachelors-level candidate will be approximately $42,000.

Requirements: Bachelors degree in psychology or a closely related discipline; research experience.

Time Commitment: Two years, with the possibility of an extension.

Anticipated Start Date: July-August 2014

The Success Connection Program is a unique job-shadowing and mentoring opportunity. The program connects selected students with highly accomplished Simmons alumnae in your field for a one-day job-shadow and mentoring experience to take place during the 2014-2015 academic year.

The National Science Foundation sponsors REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates): these prestigious programs are usually about 10 weeks long, held at research universities, and pay a stipend of about $4,000-$5,000.

Participation in an REU is a HUGE plus for a grad school application!
