Join Marsh Chapel on an Apple Picking Student Excursion Saturday September 19th!

Students will be picked up in front of Marsh Plaza at 9:00am and be taken to Westward Orchards in Harvard, MA for apple picking fun! Students will return to BU Campus by 1:00pm. Those who RSVP must pay a $10 fee IN CASH to the Marsh Chapel Office by Wednesday, September 16th.

BU Sophomores, Juniors, & Seniors: Apply For Marsh Fellows Today!

Marsh Fellows is a PAID internship program for Sophomores, Juniors, & Seniors, exploring life’s big questions around meaning, purpose, authentic success, and happiness. This small cohort of students engages in meaningful weekly conversations to further their spiritual learning and growth, while providing opportunities for authentic community around topics of religion and spirituality.

The goal of the internship is to nurture the intellectual, ethical, and spiritual life of participants who are willing to work with a wide spectrum of people. Students should be prepared to lead challenging conversations that include conflicting worldviews, moral convictions, and religious practices, as well as discuss questions that have no definitive answers.

ALL SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY SEMPTEMBER 16TH.

Robert Allan Hill is the Dean of Marsh Chapel and a Professor of New Testament and Pastoral Theology at Boston University. He is the author of nineteen books, including: Charles River: Essays and Meditations for Daily Reading (2015). His weekly sermon can be heard live at Marsh Chapel, and around the globe on livestream available at bu.edu/chapel and on wbur.org, Sundays at 11am. His recent preaching and speaking schedule has included the New England Annual Conference, the Baltimore Washington Annual Conference, Chautauqua Institution, Morehouse College, the GBHEM\UMC Missio Dei Colloquy, and the UMC Lakeside Chautauqua, McGill University, and a number of pulpits across the country (Harvard Memorial, Foundry UMC, San Diego First UMC, Evanston First UMC, Asbury First UMC, and others).

The Rev. Dr. Karen Coleman serves as the University Chaplain for Episcopal Ministry. Where she welcomes the daily interactions with students, faculty and staff. “There is a diversity and range of ideas, cultures, economics and abilities that makes BU comes alive.

Some students are a one-time encounter, and others attend our weekly opportunities to connect. Chaplaincy makes a difference in the lives of our student. We are a non-anxious, non-judgmental presence when the world our students inhabit is about moving onto the next thing in their lives. It’s ok not to have the answers or even know the questions when you encounter a chaplain but to believe and have faith or to have faith that I have faith”. Rev. Karen also serves as an Assisting Priest at Trinity Episcopal Church, Boston. She is also a certified mindfulness instructor and spiritual director.

She is a graduate of The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where she holds a B.A. in Art History and a masters and Doctor of Divinity degree from Episcopal Divinity School. The title of her thesis was “Episcopal Female Leaders of African Heritage: Trailblazers and Colleagues”. Prior to her seminary studies she worked in the higher education and non-profit field as a development professional focusing on major gifts.

Her BU committees include, Diversity and Inclusion, Office of Students Affairs / Campus Partners liaison, and the BU School of Theology Anglican Episcopal Community of Learning. In her spare time, she is actively involved with her sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, needlepoints and enjoys birdwatching.

The Rev. Dr. Jessica Chicka serves as University Chaplain for International Students at Boston University. She is an ordained minister of Word and Sacrament in the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and a clergy representative to the New England Synod Council. In her role as University Chaplain, Jessica walks alongside students during their time at the university, helping them to discover religious and spiritual resources. She helps lead weekly Interdenominational Protestant Worship at Marsh Chapel and mentors undergraduate and graduate students on a one-on-one basis. In addition to working with international students, she also oversees the non-Christian religious student organizations on campus, advocating for them within the university and making sure they have the support they need. Jessica is also a sustainability liaison for BU Sustainability, connecting her passion for environmental justice – the topic of her dissertation, God, Self, Humanity, Earth: Christian Ecological Ethics in Local Contexts – with her work at BU. Jessica earned three degrees from BU School of Theology – MTS (’07), STM (’11), and PhD (’19) and has the distinction of being the first recorded ordination at Marsh Chapel.

As the Associate Chaplain for Student Outreach, Jonathan promotes and supports Marsh Chapel’s various worship, ministry, and wellbeing programs for students at Boston University. Jonathan’s work centers on building community, engaging students in religious life, and serving as a representative of religious life at university events and activities.

Originally from Charlotte, NC, Jonathan joined Marsh Chapel after having graduated from Yale Divinity School in May of 2022 with a Master of Divinity. Some of Jonathan’s involvements at Yale Divinity included serving as a Chapel Minister for Marquand Chapel and Coordinator for the YDS DivFarm. Jonathan also received his Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies from Davidson College in Davidson, NC and has been ordained by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
