Italian Home for Children

Italian Home for Children Supporting youth, adults, and families with mental health, behavioral and educational challenges.

Italian Home for Children is a comprehensive social service agency providing intervention and long term support services to children, adults and families who are struggling with trauma, abuse, mental illness, learning disorders and poverty. Many of the people we serve, ages 3-80, have a long history of seeking help from more typical sources: public schools, pediatricians and primary care doctors,

community- based therapists and governmental social service agencies, without any sustainable progress. Italian Home for Children has a proven track record of working with these children, their families and community supports. We are skilled in providing individualized services for each child and family along a continuum designed to produce fundamental changes in skill sets, behavior and coping strategies that last across time. Italian Home for Children is unique in our ability to support a family from crisis through reunification and long term community stabilization. At Italian Home for Children we are striving to create communities where all children, adults and families are embraced and empowered to reach their full potential. There are an estimated quarter of a million children and adults in Massachusetts living with serious mental illness. Currently there are nearly 45,000 children in the care of DCF, receiving care through in home services and out of home placements. To address this growing concern Italian Home for Children has three primary service areas: Residential, Clinical and Educational.

Thanks to the generosity of KABOOM! and Sierra, and demolition help from Timberline Construction, Italian Home for Children is building a brand-new playground on our Jamaica Plain campus — designed by our kids, for our kids.

We need 200 volunteers for the build, September 30 to October 2, and we'd love to see our IHC community there. Staff, family, and friends age 16+ are all welcome, and there are low-impact options for anyone with mobility restrictions.

The Italian Home for Children Invitational Tournament is coming back. After a brief hiatus, we're bringing this tradition home on Monday, October 12, at New Bedford Country Club, and this year's field is filling fast.

Expect authentic Italian food and drink all along the course, Italian automobiles on display, live music, games, and a few surprises. A great day of golf that funds real mental health, behavioral, educational, and family services for the community.

Reserve your foursome before the tee sheet closes.

Italian Home for Children is a proud 2026 grant recipient of the Catholic Health Foundation! IHC was awarded $10,000 to support our project "Strengthening Behavioral Health Services through Workforce Investment Phase 2."

Our workforce is our lifeblood. It's because of their skill and commitment that we're able to deliver excellent behavioral health care to the nearly 1,400 children, families, and adults who come through our doors each year.

We're ever grateful for this investment in our team.

What a night! Italian Home for Children's Emerging Leaders Board hosted our first-ever Summer Night's Trivia on August 13 at Publico Street Bistro & Garden in South Boston, and it was a great turnout for a first-time event. Young professionals from across Greater Boston came together for a few hours of trivia, laughs, and friendly competition, all in support of the children and families IHC has served since 1919.

Thank you to everyone who joined a team, cheered from the sidelines, donated a raffle prize, or spread the word. As a first-time event for our Emerging Leaders Board, this was about more than trivia questions and bragging rights. It was about building a community of young professionals who care about the children, families, and adults who need our behavioral health services and want to make a difference in their lives.

We're already looking ahead to next year. If you couldn't make it this time, keep an eye out. There will be another chance to play for a cause.

At Italian Home’s Mary Savioli Pallotta Educational Center, an art therapy group about gratitude became something bigger than the original activity.

Students in Classroom 5 started by decorating birdhouses to represent people, places, and things they were thankful for — some kept theirs for the animals on campus, others gave theirs away as a thank-you to a caregiver or staff member.

Then a few students noticed the campus bird bath needed some care, and took it upon themselves to clean and refill it. No one asked them to. They just saw a way to extend the gratitude they'd been practicing into action.

It's a small moment, but it says a lot about what happens when young people are given room to turn a feeling into something real. Grateful for the creativity, the follow-through, and the students who reminded all of us that gratitude is a practice that can move mountains.

Summer's in full swing, and we're already dreaming of hot cocoa, twinkling lights, and wrapping paper. Fun, right? Christmas in July is our favorite kind of early!

Here's the thing about the holidays at IHC: they take a village. Toy drives, gift wrapping parties, holiday visits, decorating common spaces, hosting parties for kids and families across our residential, community, and school-based programs — none of it happens without people who pitch in.

So consider this our official heads up: we'll be looking for volunteers this holiday season, and we'd love for you to be part of it. Whether you've got an hour to wrap gifts or a whole afternoon to help run an event, there's a role for you.

More details coming this fall. For now, just know we can hear the sleigh bells ringing in the distance!

Meanwhile, you can sign up right here.

Three new hot water heaters. New copper piping. Repaired walls. All in a building where our kids sleep, shower, and live — and all donated.

Thank you to Rick Dorci of E.M. Duggan for leading this effort, and to the partners who made it possible: Charles D. Sheehy Company (Jeff Camuso, Stephen Gould) for the pipe, fittings, and valves; Axion Specialty Contracting (Paul Camara) for the insulation and labor; Pendleton Associates (Brad Pendleton) and F.W. Webb Company (Norman Fine) for the Turbo Max water heaters; and Local 12 for the skilled trades work.

A project that would have cost tens of thousands of dollars — made possible because these partners care about our kids. Thank you also to Diana Dorci, who never stops looking out for us.

We are blessed.

Save the date: Thursday, August 13th, Italian Home for Children's Emerging Leaders Board is hosting our inaugural Summer Night's Trivia at Publico Street Bistro & Garden in South Boston.

It's a simple idea — good trivia, good company, an after-work crowd of young professionals coming together — in service of something bigger. Every dollar raised goes directly toward IHC's programs for youth, adults, and families facing emotional, behavioral, and educational challenges across Greater Boston.

Since 1919, Italian Home for Children has been a steady presence for young people who need it most. This August, we're inviting the next generation of supporters to be part of that legacy.

Bring your smartest friends! Assemble a team, grab a drink, and help us reach our $10,000 goal.
