A Healthy Reminder: Eat Healthy because, You are What You Eat!

There's a funny joke that bears a lot of truth... here it is:

One day, the organs of the human body are arguing over who is the most important.

The brain makes it's case that the body wouldn't do much without it leading the charge.

The heart says it's necessary for blood to flow.

The lungs talk about how important breath is to sustain Life.

The liver says it processes just about everything in the human body.

And on and on it goes.

Then the colon chimes in, "You are all crucially important, but it is I who feed you that is most important. The other organs laugh. But the colon to prove it's point goes on STRIKE, and in a few days every organ is agreeing the large intestine is most important.

Again, you are what you Eat, so Eat Healthy... Be Healthy!

Here's a Prescription that will help you Live Longer:

When it comes to living longer, you might expect me to tell you to exercise everyday, or to eat your fruits and vegetables, and that would be true but in addition to that, there’s more to it. According to this article from Eat This, Not That, some shocking things that lengthen your lifespan include flossing your teeth, reading, and becoming a parent. The article also asserts that constant urban living and excessive overthinking can actually shorten your lifespan, so make sure you get out to nature every once in a while to clear your head. DO's: Have a belief in your purpose and a spiritual connection, prioritize happiness, avoid stress and anxiety, nurture your social circle, be more conscientious.

DONT's: Avoid bad habits like eating processed foods, sitting still for too long, holding a grudge, keeping to yourself, and letting fear hold you back.

If you want to live longer, ā€œstop thinking that only big changes count.ā€ This reminded me of a quote from ā€œThe Stonecutter’s Credoā€ by Jacob Riis:

ā€œWhen nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.ā€ Small changes each day will amount to something big, so long as we’re patient enough to wait for it.

It’s a fruit, one that I’ve been singing the praises of for years. I eat between 1-3 nearly every day.

Apples. Here’s what the December 17, 2013 edition of Science News reported: ā€œPrescribing an apple a day to all adults aged 50 and over would prevent or delay around 8,500 vascular deaths such as heart attacks and strokes every year in the U.K.ā€

It was a study done in England, but the study applies to people all over the world….

Researchers said that an apple a day does appear to ā€œkeep the doctor away,ā€ and is similar to providing the healthful cardiovascular benefits of giving statin drugs to everyone over 50. But without the side effect.

More good news…

Recent research shows that apples are one of the best fruits for regaining youth and to help reduce bodyfat. How great is that?…

According to the May/June ’12 Life Extension, a recent study ā€œusing 600 milligrams per day [of apple polyphenols] followed patients for 16 weeks. It demonstrated a 9.4 square-inch loss of visceral fat in the supplemented patients…. Meanwhile, placebo patients gained 3.3 square inches.ā€

Visceral fat is the most dangerous kind–hard on your heart. It collects around the organs and is a key contributor to belly fat–that rock-hard bloat…

The same article discussed the longevity benefits of apples: ā€œIn the last year alone, scientists from three different laboratories have published studies that demonstrate how polyphenol molecules derived from apples extend life span in various species by as much as 12 percent….

ā€œOne polyphenol, phloridzin, which is heavily concentrated in the skin of the apple, also potently suppresses several processes leading to glycation, another contributor to aging.ā€

So an apple a day can keep not only the doctor away, but aging, belly fat and premature death at bay. Yay!
