Our last student spotlight of the ‘21-‘22 school year is Kaiwen Qian! Kai is no stranger to Boston University— he holds a bachelors in Public Relations from College of Communication,! Through our masters collaboratory project, Kai was able to work with BUCOM as a client to conduct focus groups. He cites this as his most inspiring accomplishment in EMS. Kai has also offered to chat with anyone who might be interested in the program and can be reached at [email protected]!
Hear more from Kaiwen:
“I joined the program because I love BUCOM!!!!! Four years here nourished me and walked me through the door of public relations. From there, I found passion in digital strategy and wanted to learn more hands-on analytic skills related to the current COM market. That’s when I found Emerging Media Studies to be the perfect place to pursue my interest. Within three semesters, I learned hard skills that I never dreamed of such as R Programming, SPSS, and HTML. What also fascinated me is the theory behind different media and networks, how people consume them, and how perception has been shaped.
My takeaway would be don’t hesitate to reach out. The bonds and friendships I built with all my classmates and the EMS faculty are the most precious assets I couldn’t dream of before attending. I was so afraid of losing my precious bonds at BU, but the EMS family has embraced me and promoted my full potential to be active and true to me. I am very very grateful I became a family member.”

Meet Benita, one of our PhD candidates! She holds a bachelor's in Media Management from Macromedia University in Berlin and a MPhil in Film Studies from Trinity College Dublin.
Hear more from Benita:
"I joined the program because I wanted to continue doing research and EMS has a great research community. Additionally, there is a lot of collaboration in the department and I hope to work with many professors. I also aim to improve my methodological skills. I aim to combine my interest in film studies with a quantitative approach throughout my time at BU.
My advice would be to reach out to professors and classmates if you have questions or need help. Everyone is really kind and supportive."

You're invited to attend A Matrix of Challenges, hosted by the Division of Emerging Media Studies. Registration is required: https://sites.bu.edu/emsconf/
Our lives sometimes seem as if they are only intersections of cross-cutting pressures and forces. As we experience this matrix, many questions arise. To what extent are we able to exercise control over our own lives? What are our responsibilities to care for others? How can we protect ourselves from proliferating threats? How can we continue to exercise our individual autonomy?
This conference brings together a diverse array of scholars to share their research on these concerns and intersecting forces. Their research implications cover international relations, community activism, online behavior, and even our internal moods.
