Congrats Pratima!! Another NECO rising⭐️
For the fifth year running, we have put our support for the National Optometric Association community into action by recognizing three members of the National Optometric Student Association - NOSA with $7,000 in grants. In addition to awarding grants, National Vision recently donated optometric equipment to assist an NOA member in Chicago whose practice was severely damaged during riots. Check out the press release in the link to learn more. And, congratulations to the grant winners – you excelled at “putting passion into practice!”

Supporting the mission of PRISM - NECOproud!
PRISM is an organization with the goal of increasing LGBTQ+ competency within our profession through educational, social, and advocacy events. In honor of Pride Month, we would like to take this time to commemorate the advocates, icons, protesters, leaders, and revolutionaries behind LGBTQ+ rights. PRISM would like to especially recognize the LGBTQ+ people of color who faced and challenged racial and sexual prejudice.
There is no question that systemic racism exists to this day. Racial inequality is still pervasive long past the Civil War, long past Jim Crow Laws, and long past the 19th amendment. Systemic racism exists in employment, healthcare, education, criminal justice fields, and more. PRISM supports BLM not only because Black and LGBTQ+ history is intrinsically connected, but also because it is our job as healthcare professionals to advocate for the rights of all people.
With the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, join us in commemorating the LGBTQ+ people of color who stood up to defend their rights and community on the NECO Student Life page (). Read, listen, and learn about the lives of Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Miss Major, and Storme DeLarverie, just to name a few. There is no Pride without Black voices.
Many thanks to the NECO library, especially Heather Edmonds, for making many valuable resources available to us. You can find more resources available here: https://library.neco.edu/resources/prism.

As an academic institution, we believe that education is a fundamental element of building a diverse and inclusive community. Admittedly, Juneteenth was not a holiday that was well known by many of us. We encourage everyone to take the time to learn more about Juneteenth.
