Excel Academy Rhode Islands Black Student Union hosted a phenomenal Snack & Paint fundraiser last week!

This fundraiser was held to raise money for a large mural, designed & orchestrated by the Black Student Union, which will live in the gymnasium & be done by a Providence-based black artist.

Kathy Drane, Ebony Akinrimisi, and students apart of this affinity group spent weeks planning, ordering, and getting their hands dirty (literally) prepping for this event & it was a huge success!

Participants had two options - Solo paint or follow a beautiful painting tutorial led by our very own, Mandy Vuolo. With over 70 participants including staff, students, families, and community members - it was nothing but joy & artistic creativity.

This mural, planned to be completed this summer, will be a lasting memory of hard-work, dedication, and Excel pride!

🎓 Congratulations Alexandra Morillo Johnson and Estephany Morales! 🎓

The Excel Network Team celebrated the college graduation of two very special alums this afternoon! Alexandra and Estephany have been vital members of our Student Recruitment team over the last few years. For many families, a phone call from Alexandra or Estephany offering them a spot at Excel was the very beginning of their Excel experience. They set the tone with their respect, patience, and attention to detail, answering questions and ensuring every family had what they needed to successfully enroll their student at Excel.

Thank you both for the incredible contributions you've made to the Excel community over the last few years. We can't wait to see you take on your next opportunities - Estephany as you pursue an MBA at Lesley University and Alexandra in Law School at Suffolk University Law School!

Floyd came into fifth grade struggling with organization, with follow-through, with the habits that would carry him through middle school. His agenda wasn’t making it home. Homework wasn’t getting done.

Beth Northup, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Floyd’s mom Yesenia started texting. Multiple times a day, every day. Photos of completed homework. Real back-and-forth.

By the second trimester, Floyd was taking agency in his schoolwork. He earned a PACK award as a Contributor to Community Care.

At the ceremony, Yesenia said something that Beth keeps coming back to: “I was worried before. Now I have a sense of calmness when I think about his future.”

“That’s why I’m here,” Beth said. “This is the work. And for the first time in a long time, I have enough focus and enough support to actually do it.”

The Arab Student Union at Excel Academy High School celebrated Arab American Heritage Month with a Carnival! Students enjoyed henna, dancing, games, karaoke, and great food!

“I had been looking for this environment for a long time.”

Beth Northup (Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Excel Academy Rhode Island) has sixteen years in education. She’ll also tell you she’s felt more growth at Excel Academy Charter Schools Rhode Island in these past months than in years at other places.

“Part of it is the structure,” she says. “My job here is singular: support teachers so that teachers can support students. I have a lane and a laser focus. Everyone around me has their own focus, and we actually collaborate across them. Although that sounds basic, it is also uncommon and powerful.”

Part of it is the coaching culture. Weekly one-on-ones. A Head of School who is openly reflective about her own growth — which creates permission for everyone around her to do the same. “I can walk in and say, I need help with this, and not feel like I’m admitting a failure,” Beth said. “I can say, here’s what I want to try, and feel trusted to try it.”
