WHAT WE NEED FOR A RETURN TO CAMPUS

Nearly all of my recent calls with families revert to “will students be on campus in the fall?” As a program director of a sailing school (and eager to get on the water!) and a consultant to families and independent schools, I spend much of my days thinking about how we can resume in-person learning. I believe these five points are crucial for a return to campus:

1. Widespread testing
All students, faculty, and administrators will need to have access to frequent, rapid result, and reliable testing.

2. Quarantine of infected
A detailed plan to isolate any infected students including off-campus students.

3. Containment of exposed individuals
A comprehensive plan to determine what to do with individuals who were exposed to an individual who has tested positive.

4. Relaxation of social distancing policies
Operating a residential community while abiding by social distancing requirements may prove to be impossible.

5. Acceptance of risk by all parties
An understanding that the virus will likely be present on campus without a proven cure for many months.
