Tumblehome's Barnas Monteith has released a new AI pre-print manuscript. about how different languages tend have different semantic accuracies / efficiences in large language models (like ChatGPT) due to the enature of the language itself. This will potentially lead to local advantages for LLM's and can also inform how we develop LLM-based educational technology tools for different foreign language speakers. Check it out here:
Unleashing the Economic Potential of Large Language Models: The Case of Chinese Language Efficiency Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized the way we interact with technology, and ChatGPT, based on the GPT-3.5 architecture, has garnered significant attention for its exceptional performance. The widespread adoption of ChatGPT by over 100 million users within three months, genera...

Barnas Monteith, has recently been named organizational PI (Principal Investigator) for a $2 million NSF grant to explore a new data science / AI curriculum, that will help students better understand how math, logic and computer science relate to each other. The project, named LogicDS, will use fun and engaging machine learning data sets as key examples for modern computational thinking. The project team, based at Texas Tech University, in collaboration with Concord Consortium and Tumblehome, will work with rural and urban students at schools in Texas, Florida and Massachusetts, to analyze a new logic-based approach to education. The team will investigate how logic learning can serve as the common basis for other disciplines, such as AI/computer science, related statistics/probability mathematics, and programming in data-centric languages like R and apply this knowledge to other languages like Python. At the end of the intervention, students will be able to use advanced data wrangling and statistics techniques for their own science & engineering projects. https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2201393

Tumblehome’s youngest author was recognized on Good Morning America as part of their Women’s History Month feature about the "Next Generation of Change Makers" a few days ago, for using Artificial Intelligence and robotic technology to find microplastics in the ocean. Congratulations to Anna Du, author of Microplastics and Me. They not only talked about Anna’s project but had her demonstrate it live during the show from their New York City studios (along with her mentor Barnas Monteith). You can find more information about Anna's book at https://tumblehomebooks.org/book/microplastics-and-me/

Congratulations to Tumblehome for being awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation grant this week for a project titled: “Puffins: Exploring how narrative, data science, and artificial intelligence enhance the study of ecology in middle school.”
Barnas Monteith, Tumblehome Co-Founder and resident AI education expert, commented, "We're really excited to be able to further develop our AI curriculum approach at Tumblehome. AI is pretty much everywhere these days, from videogames to Alexa to TikTok filters to ChatGPT, children are being saturated in machine learning applications and experiences. But for many kids, AI is still a black box.
Because the project is NSF funded, the curriculum and materials produced from this project will be made freely available to the public, so teachers and students across the country can make use of what Tumblehome creates and learns, from this study.
Stay tuned for more -- and be sure to check out our Benjamin Franklin Award-winning book, The Puffin Plan, here: https://tumblehomebooks.org/book/the-puffin-plan/
