We believe that great art instruction should be accessible and available to anyone, regardless of your experience level or if you are able to study full time, or only 3 hours a week. Because of that, The Academy of Realist Art Boston offers our main program classes (both full time and part time), evening and weekend classes and workshops for ANYONE of ANY SKILL LEVEL. Even if you've never picked up a pencil or a paintbrush! Classes begin in 2 weeks so sign up soon!

The Academy of Realist Art, Boston offers students of all skill levels individualized practical instruction. Advancing through classes at their own pace, students work to achieve the highest levels of draftsmanship, drawing and painting skills.

The grisaille is an important landmark assignment for our students to understand how to handle the many complexities of oil paint while working in the familiar territory of monochrome, value based thinking. This is the first painting assignment that figure students work on.
The light effect and illusion of form take center stage in a grisaille. Using lead white, raw umber and bone black they create a painting using a mixed neutral black made progressively lighter using lead white. This assignment eases students into the world of oil painting before we introduce more pigments with higher chroma.
