Back-to-school season can bring a lot of emotions.

Excitement for a fresh start can exist alongside sadness that summer is ending. There’s the anticipation of meeting new students, the pressure to feel ready, the guilt of what didn’t get done, and the challenge of making space for everything competing for your attention.

And then there are the microjoys (and even macrojoys)—the laughs, connections, breakthroughs, and little and big moments that can make all of that preparation feel worthwhile.

There’s a lot packed into the emotional side of back-to-school season.

Turn language practice into a little getaway.

Invite students to imagine they’re visiting a place where the target language is spoken, then have them send a postcard home — in the target language, of course.

They can write about:
- where they are
- what they’ve seen or done
- something they’ve eaten
- who they’ve met
- an adventure they’d like to have next

It’s a simple way to practice writing while bringing culture, creativity, and real-world context into the classroom. It also helps understand what they might already know about the target language or potential places where the target language is spoken.

Bonus idea: Let students choose their own destination or assign different locations and have the class guess where each postcard was “sent” from.
