Founded in 1919 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as the first Catholic college for women in New England, Emmanuel today is a coeducational, residential college with a 17-acre campus in the heart of Boston's educational, scientific, cultural and medical communities. Emmanuel enrolls more than 2,000 students including 1,800 traditional undergraduate students from 35 states and territories and 42 countries. At Emmanuel College, excellence in the liberal arts and sciences intersects with experiential learning opportunities, including student-faculty collaboration on research and scholarship; internships with an array of corporations, institutions and nonprofits; service learning; study abroad programs; and scores of co-curricular activities that promote engagement and leadership. The College offers more than 70 majors, minors and concentrations in the arts, humanities, sciences, business, education and nursing, along with graduate programs in education, nursing and management, across five academic schools. A strong sense of community allows students to connect easily with each other and faculty mentors, forming enduring relationships that enhance learning. An Emmanuel College education challenges students to become leaders and professionals who are critical thinkers, ethical decision makers and engaged members of the local community and global society.

For the second year in a row, Emmanuel students are headed to Italy for the International Meeting for Peace. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Organized by the Community of Sant'Egidio, the 40th annual gathering will bring together religious leaders, diplomats, and aid organizations from around the world to discuss refugees, childrenโ€™s rights, and threats to peace from Oct. 25-27th. Pope Leo XIV is among the leaders scheduled to attend.

Led by Professor of Theology and Religious Studies Dr. Laurie Johnston, this yearโ€™s student delegation is (left to right) Mariam Jollie Diallo โ€™28, Olivia Demacedo โ€™28 and Olga Saghia Issa โ€™28.

โ€œWhat I want to bring back to Emmanuel is understanding,โ€ said Olga. โ€œUnderstanding of different cultures and religions, and the knowledge that we can actually do this together.โ€

For an aspiring graphic designer, Nora Lafferty โ€˜27โ€™s summer internship with โ€™47 was everything she couldโ€™ve asked for.

It was a glimpse into the professional side of design, giving her a front row seat to watch the companyโ€™s creative process, their analysis of market trends and the depth of each edit stage.

From May to August, Nora developed her own hat designs, resulting in a finished product that she can add to her portfolio.

Margaret McKenna '83, vice chair of Emmanuel's Board of Trustees, was among a group of Emmanuel alumni attending Pope Leo XIV's weekly Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, just one day after his release from the hospital following surgery.

McKenna, who is in Rome on an alumni pilgrimage, was interviewed by The New York Times about seeing the pope during his first public appearance after the operation.

"It was magical seeing him," she said. "The reports were pretty positive that they caught it early and everything." Hopefully, she added, "that's the end of it."

โ€œThis experience has made me feel a special closeness to all those who are battling illness and infirmity,โ€ he said, in his first public appearance since his lung surgery.

Emmanuel College and Salve Regina University have launched a joint research project that will explore integral ecology, the Catholic framework connecting care for the environment with social justice and human dignity. ๐ŸŒ

A $25,000 Collaboration and Conference Grant from the Lilly Network of Church-Related Colleges and Universities will support two years of research by faculty and student teams from both schools, spanning business, philosophy, science and theology. Projects range from turning carbon dioxide into solar fuel to developing teaching cases on social impact leadership.

โ€œPeople need to collaborate and work together to find solutions for how we solve these issues, respect the environment, and care for our common home.โ€ โ€” Fr. Federico Cinocca, Vice President of Mission & Ministry

The public is invited to join the conversation: Emmanuel will host a lecture on climate and environmental justice to close year one, with a faculty roundtable to close year two.

As a development officer for Boston-based nonprofit Oxfam America, Emmanuel alumna Mishaal Khan โ€™19 secures grants and funding to support programs that fight poverty and inequality all over the world.

Making decisions that require global perspective, Khan often draws from lessons learned during her undergraduate experience: like โ€œeye-openingโ€ conversations about Middle Eastern studies with Professor of Political Science Dr. Lenore Martin, or growing her confidence and ability to ask sharp questions in discussion-based courses with Associate Professor of Political Science, Dr. Petros Vamvakas.

When it comes to supporting Oxfamโ€™s efforts, the foundation Khan built as a political science major at Emmanuel prepared her to tackle humanitarian issues on a global scale.

โ€œI knew back then I was eager to contribute to the change-making process. I got the offer from Oxfam, and the rest is history,โ€ she said.
