An important editorial from the Boston Globe Editorial Board highlights what happens when hostility toward “Zionists” moves beyond political debate and into spaces that are supposed to be safe.
Criticism of Israel and its government is legitimate. But when “Zionist” becomes a label used to decide who deserves empathy, who belongs, or whose pain is worthy of respect, we have crossed a very different line.
For many Jews, connection to Israel is deeply intertwined with Jewish identity, history, religion, and peoplehood. That does not mean supporting every action of the Israeli government. Jews should not have to renounce that connection—or pass someone else’s political litmus test—to receive compassion, respect, or professional care.
We’re especially grateful to Dr. Miri Bar-Halpern, a trauma expert featured in the editorial, for her important work addressing “traumatic invalidation” and advocating for trauma-informed care for Jewish patients.
Therapy should be a safe place for everyone. Including Zionists.

Happy Independence Day!

As we celebrate our nation’s founding, we remember President George Washington’s 1790 letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island. In it, he expressed a vision of an America where “everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.”

More than two centuries later, that vision of religious liberty, safety, and belonging continues to inspire our work. At MEAA, we remain committed to ensuring that Jewish educators and students can learn, teach, and thrive in environments free from antisemitism and discrimination.

Wishing everyone a safe, joyful, and meaningful Independence Day. 🇺🇸

A Lexington middle school principal recently sent an email apologizing to Arab, Muslim, Palestinian, and Lebanese students who were offended by a workshop about antisemtism. That decision raises an important question: Since when does teaching about a marginalized group require an apology?

Every student deserves to feel respected and supported in school. But educators should not have to apologize for teaching about antisemitism —or because a lesson focuses on the experiences of one marginalized group rather than another.

Good news from the MTA Board of Directors Meeting: NBI 12 was ruled out of order.💪🏻✡️
Despite being framed as a governance proposal, the rationale was largely an attempt to defend the MTA’s controversial Middle East resource page and dismiss concerns raised about antisemitic content.
Ruling this NBI as out of order is a win for members who believe concerns about antisemitism deserve to be heard, not brushed aside.
