For 100 years, Puccini’s final opera has been missing the ending he intended. A BU musicologist set out to change that.

Deborah Burton, an associate professor of music at BU’s College of Fine Arts, used the Italian composer’s original deathbed notes, including some never studied before, to reconstruct the finale of Turandot. Her version premiered this summer at a historic opera house in Florence, Italy, bringing Puccini’s vision closer to life a century after his death.

By studying his compositional notes and drawing on decades of research into his work, Burton found a way to complete the climactic love duet using clues the composer left behind.

BU has a new custom hot sauce of its own, and it’s bringing the heat with a sustainable twist 🌶️

Meet Scarlet BUrn, a custom hot sauce created by BU Dining Services and Lowell-based Craic Sauce. Made with locally grown produce, including ingredients that might otherwise go to waste, the sauce combines sweet, tangy, and spicy flavors, with students helping choose the winning recipe.

Scarlet BUrn is arriving at BU dining halls and select campus markets this week. It’s another way BU is supporting local farms, reducing food waste, and keeping its food sourcing close to home.

BU engineers are using supercomputers to investigate how water droplets break apart at extreme speeds and why existing models may be missing a critical piece of the puzzle. Their research could help improve predictions of impact damage, making future space reentry vehicles and other high-speed aircraft safer and less expensive to build and repair.

Discover the science behind these powerful impacts and how BU researchers are working to prevent them ➡️ http://spr.ly/6185BHJvql

Sarah Shute had grown up playing soccer each fall, but when her family moved to New York when she was in middle school, Shute (SHA’08, Wheelock’17) learned that soccer there was a spring sport.

During a gym class, she discovered that the teacher running the field hockey unit also coached the school’s team. Shute would take the sport she loved all the way to Boston University. As an undergrad, she quickly distinguished herself as one of the field hockey program’s greatest players. She is one of only four Terriers to amass 100 career points, remains tied for the most games played in program history, and ranks third all time in goals. BU won three conference titles in her four years with the team, and Shute was named the America East Offensive Player of the Year in 2005.

Now, she is bringing her passion for the game back to BU in a different role: In February, Shute was named the fourth head coach in Boston University field hockey history, a role she accepted after six years as the head coach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Before taking the helm at MIT, Shute served as an assistant coach under 45-year head coach Sally Starr, who ranks sixth all time in wins at the Division I level.
