Join us on Friday for our end of semester conference, which will also be an opportunity for 2026 graduates to celebrate! Grad cords will be available for pick up. Come out to socialize and listen to some co-op talks! It will be in Dana 114, and the time of the event will be updated here. 🚀

Given the current funding climate, graduate programs have become increasingly competitive. Prof. Toyoko Orimoto will offer her candid advice regarding all things related to graduate school, including: what you can do as an undergraduate student to maximize your chances of getting into a graduate program; Masters vs PhD programs; selecting schools to apply to; preparing your applications; making your final choices. She can also offer advice to students who were unsuccessful in applying to graduate programs this year. This will primarily be a Q&A session, so please bring your questions!

The Northeastern Satellite Lab is hosting a launch party on Apr 8th, 11:45 am - 1:30 pm, to watch the launch of PROVES-Atlas, Northeastern's first spacecraft! The Satellite Lab is a newer club on campus, and is looking for students and professors to get involved. This is a really neat opportunity, so you should all attend! This will act as our SPS meeting next week. 🛰️📡🌌

Following our co-op talk today, we'll be hearing from Dr. Jornet, who will be talking about the Northeastern Satellite Lab and about a Northeastern satellite launch happening next week (4/8). More details are in the next post about how to attend this launch watch party, which SPS will be attending instead of our normal lunch meeting📡🛰️Dr. Jornet is looking to start a space institute at Northeastern and is looking to meet students interested in opportunities surrounding this.

Dr. Jornet is a COE Distinguished Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Research and directs the Ultrabroadband Nanonetworking Laboratory. His research sits at the intersection of physics and engineering, focusing on terahertz communications, nanonetworking, and next-generation wireless systems, which are all technologies that are increasingly important for space and satellite applications.

He is an IEEE Fellow, and has authored over 300 publications and led more than $30 million in research funding. He also advises Northeastern’s Satellite Lab, a student club that encourages hands-on student work in space systems, and is helping drive new initiatives to expand Northeastern’s presence in space research and technology.

At tomorrow's meeting, we'll be hearing from Sara Nelson, the Associate Director of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (URF). She'll be discussing PEAK Awards, the AJC Merit Research Scholarship, and other URF opportunities! See you there!

Hi SPS! We have a professor talk today at 12pm Egan 206! Professor Long Ju from MIT Physics is seeking undergraduate researchers and will give a talk about the project: “Photolithography on Graphene Based Superconductors”. Here is a description of the talk: “Crystalline graphene has revealed itself as an exciting platform for superconductivity. This research project involves device fabrication using photolithography, which is the same technique that silicon is patterned into transistors and used as computer chips. Professor Ju has developed a low-cost photolithography setup with the intent to demonstrate the principles of photolithography and semiconductor manufacturing to undergraduate students.”

Join us for tomorrow's meeting, where Dr. Kirsten Hall will give a talk on her work in climate science and astrophysics! The abstract is below:

"Dr. Kirsten Hall is an astrophysicist who also harnesses the power of Earth-observing satellites to tackle climate change. In astronomy, she studies the evolution of galaxies and the growth of structure in the Universe. She’s especially focused on how the Universe’s most active galaxies (quasars and dusty star forming galaxies) shape the evolution of galaxies and their environments. She has made the first definitive detection of the hottest phase of quasar outflows using the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect and shows how DSFGs live in the most massive dark matter haloes at earliest times. For two years following her PhD, she pivoted into climate science to use her expertise to convert raw satellite data and reanalysis data into actionable information to improve climate models and inform policy. This work focuses primarily on atmospheric rivers and their connection to large-scale climate dynamics. As a first-generation college graduate, she brings a unique perspective to higher education and public engagement."
