Happy 248th birthday to the U.S. Marine Corps! 🎉
Tun Tavern, which was located about two blocks from the Museum in Old City Philadelphia, is often regarded as the birthplace of the Marine Corps. The Continental Marines, as the Marine Corps was initially called, was formed by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on Nov. 10, 1775. A historical marker stands near where the Tun Tavern once stood from 1693-1781 on what was the corner of Water Street and Tun Alley. The marker ends with the Latin phrase "Semper fidelis," the Marine Corps motto meaning "always faithful" or "always loyal," which is often shortened to Semper Fi.
