Our on-line content is based on our in-person classes, which are offered at three levels (you will be placed in the proper level based on your on-line placement test and essay; we will e-mail the link to the you). In each level there are learning materials that will help you with your reading comprehension, vocabulary building, and writing skills. You will be expected to complete the work for each class within your level.
Additionally, there are LIVE class sessions in which speaking, and listening is emphasized. As a bonus, we offer chat sessions for students to come in and interact with ELI staff on most evenings.
Join us classes start every Monday!

Maggie took a college online course on Museums in Boston this summer. Her assignment was to recreate a painting that she learned about.
How do you think she did?
This is a great strength of attending ELI because students can take college courses while taking part in our program. Students can explore different areas of interest beyond just the study of English.

Crabbing at the Jersey Shore
In New Jersey, we use regional terminology that reflects our own diverse culture. Just like in Boston where the locals say "wicked" in many contexts, in NJ, we prefer to use the term "shore" as opposed to "beach." Thus, I am happy to share this memory of my first experience crabbing at the Jersey Shore with my nephews; we caught 22 crabs in about 1.5 hours!!!

Dear everyone
I am sad to say goodbye to everyone, thank you Dan ,Chris and Katherine ,Thank you for your blessings and thank you for your guidance on my study. Thanks to this online class for giving me a better understanding of the United States. I enjoy the whole learning process very much. I also appreciate the school for providing me with a good learning experience. I hope I will have the opportunity to study at ELI in the future.
All the best
Yvonne
Last week's curriculum focused on money and politics. Therefore, the idiom of the week is, "Costs an arm and a leg."
The meaning of this idiomatic expression is that an item of interest to you or to someone is very expensive.
For example, when discussing the impact of COVID-19 on prices we could say any of the following:
"At first, during the pandemic, masks were costing an arm and a leg, but now the prices are more reasonable."
"Tickets to China from the US cost an arm and a leg right now."
Can you think of your own way to use this idiomatic expression? Please post your own version below!
