The Official SGA Statement in solidarity with the movement against racial injustice.
Read the statement below:
___ “Our Student Government Association (SGA) stands in solidarity with the Black community, with those who demand change against violence, against racism, against police brutality, and in full support of open discourse. We are moved and shocked by the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others who have fallen victim to a society that too often disregards the present violence towards people of color. As the voice for students, our SGA organization is a safe space for anyone who wants to express their ideas, opinions, or concerns. We have a responsibility to speak up, have open dialogue and contribute to the discourse.
Right now in the midst of the Covid epidemic, many of us are far apart, in different cities, in different countries. You are not alone in the fight for equality. Don’t let distance hide the fact that we are still a community. An MCPHS University family. Together, we can make a bigger impact to counter the systemic racism in our country. Systemic racism is not the behavior of a few people but is often supported by institutional policies or unconscious bias. As the future healthcare leaders that will be changing the course of the medical world, we have an obligation to correct these policies, these stereotypes and biases by educating ourselves, acting and speaking out.
We encourage education and spreading awareness. We want students to utilize the resources provided by our institution, including the use of the Counseling Services office that provides emotional, and mental health support and further resources. But as students we also need to do more than just watch, we need to come together and take additional steps towards change. Donating to causes that support the Black community, signing petitions, attending events, and raising issues into public light allow us to take an active role in advocating for the well being of one another. It’s time we
build a fair and equitable society for us all.
Our university stands united.”
- Enzo Prado, SGA Executive President
