It starts with a student named Khadijah, a 0 percent test, and a young teacher who thought she had failed. It ends with a very different possibility: using better assessment and new technology to help teachers see what students need before they are left behind.

The throughline is simple. Teachers deserve more than a score.

Arnelle Banks has been teaching seventh grade math in New York City for years. Her biggest challenge is a familiar one: every student is at a different level, and in a class of 30, there is only one of her.

This year, she used Atlas by Kiddom, powered by ANet, to get more timely insight into what her students understood and where they needed support. By the end of the year, every one of her students had grown.

Her story gets at a question we think matters deeply: How can assessment and technology give teachers better information about what students need, while keeping teachers at the center of the work?

Next week, ANet CEO Michelle Odemwingie will take the stage at the Gates Foundation Goalkeepers event to explore that question and share why we believe assessment should do more than produce a score. It should help teachers know what to do next.

Your students can read the words. They can't tell you what they mean. Fluent readers who can't follow an argument, synthesize ideas, or explain what a text actually meant aren't flagged by any screener you're using. And your teachers want to help, but they don’t know where to start.

This gap has a name: the comprehension chasm.

The curriculum wasn't the only problem.

In classrooms using top-rated, knowledge-rich materials, 67% of lessons reached only surface-level understanding. Engaged teachers. Engaged students. Still not building meaning.

The missing variable wasn't the material. It was visibility.

We can't tell the difference between a student completing a task and a student building genuine understanding.

That's what a high-quality instructional assessment is built to do. For comprehension, we don't have one.
