We are the independent Simmons College chapter of She's the First, a not-for profit organization that sponsors girls’ education in low-
income countries.

Why girls? Only one in every five girls in the developing world finish primary school*, and only one out of every three countries (37 percent) has as many girls as boys in secondary schools - See more at: http://www.shesthefirst.org/get-the-facts/#sthash.O0EcR6aP.dpuf

This is a picture of Ajit George who is the son of the founder of Shanti Bhavan, one of the partner schools in India. His talk today at the was one of the most interesting to me as he talked about 'intersectional poverty'. This is the idea that there are many obstacles that those in poverty deal with, as many fight against generational debt, a high rate of su***de, caste prejudice, racial prejudice, and overall a lack of hope that must be remedied if we are to uplift those in poverty.

Day one of is complete! It's been a whirlwind day of meeting inspiring women from all over the world who all believe in the same cause. I've been learning so much and I'm so happy I have a chance to be part of this organization and run the chapter next year! Shoutout to Kelsea for starting our chapter and being a wonderful mentor to me!

We have received our quarterly update on how our girls down in Guatemala are doing and we would like to share with everyone!

Maria and Hellen both go to Starfish One by One in Guatemala, which recently got a new school!
Maria is in her final year of her specialized track to be an early childhood education teacher. She is a very persistent young woman who supports her family by making necklaces in her free time, helping to cover the costs of her studies.
Hellen is in her third and final year of her specialized track to be an early childhood education teacher. She and her family are very excited about graduation in November, a goal she considered to be very ambitious a couple years ago. Hellen's next goal is to get into the university with a scholarship, a goal she will reach by maintaining strong grades.

These girls and others like them are the reason for this organization. Please take the time to donate, especially at this time, when the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is matching funds! You can donate here: https://www.crowdrise.com/tacklepoverty
