Changing the Narrative: Language, Bias, and the Power of Words in Care

Words matter.
They shape experiences.
They influence relationships.
They carry assumptions, histories, power, and possibility.

And in healthcare โ€” especially in perinatal and neonatal spaces โ€” language can either deepen shame and disconnection or foster dignity, trust, and healing.

Iโ€™m honored to share an upcoming webinar hosted by the Family-Centered Care Taskforce: Stigmatizing Language: Changing the Narrative

๐Ÿ—“ May 14th

โฐ 11:00 AM โ€“ 12:30 PM PT

๐Ÿ’ป Free Webinar

This important conversation brings together an incredible panel of clinicians, educators, advocates, and leaders exploring how stigmatizing language impacts patients, families, and healthcare culture โ€” and what it means to intentionally create more compassionate, equitable, and trauma-informed communication practices.

The panel includes:

- Veronica Barcelona

- Jessi Barnes

- Rose Horton

- Adrienne McIntyre

- Cheniqua Morales

This conversation feels deeply aligned with the ongoing work of trauma-informed developmental care, relational health, and the recognition that language is never โ€œjust words.โ€ The way we speak about people โ€” parents, babies, colleagues, communities, ourselves โ€” shapes the environments we create and the care we deliver.

Together, we can begin shifting from labels and assumptions toward curiosity, dignity, belonging, and shared humanity.

If this speaks to you, I hope youโ€™ll join us.

I want to say this clearly:

Especially when that remembering is grounded in evidence, context, and a deep commitment to truth. Which is why I deeply respect the work of

Not because she is beyond critique. No one is. But because she does what historians are meant to do:

She connects the present to the past.
She names patterns.
She refuses to let us pretend this moment exists in isolation.

And that makes people uncomfortable. Especially in a culture that still struggles to receive womenโ€™s authority without suspicion.

Letโ€™s name the pattern:

๐Ÿ“‹ A woman synthesizes history โ†’ sheโ€™s โ€œbiasedโ€
๐Ÿ“‹ A woman speaks with clarity โ†’ sheโ€™s โ€œtoo muchโ€
๐Ÿ“‹ A woman refuses to soften truth โ†’ sheโ€™s โ€œalarmistโ€

Meanwhile

๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ผ A man speculates โ†’ heโ€™s โ€œinterestingโ€
๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ผ A man predicts โ†’ heโ€™s โ€œbrilliantโ€
๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ผ A man speaks with confidence โ†’ heโ€™s โ€œworth listening toโ€

This is not incidental. This is conditioning.

Because traumaโ€”individual and collectiveโ€”distorts how we perceive safety, truth, and authority.

And one of the most enduring patterns in dysregulated systems is this:

Even if that voice is less grounded. Even if that voice is less accountable.

Caring Science invites something different.

๐Ÿฉท It asks us to stay present.
๐Ÿฉท To stay relational.
๐Ÿฉท To stay rooted in truthโ€”even when that truth is uncomfortable.

It asks us to notice:

1.) Who are we quick to question?
2.) Who are we quick to believe?
3.) And why?

This is about whether we are willing to:

โœŠ Respect womenโ€™s intellectual authority
โœŠ Receive truth without requiring it to be softened
โœŠ Value evidence over performance
โœŠ Stay with discomfort long enough to actually learn

We listen. We engage. We think criticallyโ€”yes. But we do not default to suspicion simply because the voice is clear, grounded, and unwilling to look away.

Not just in healthcare. Not just in education. But in how we show up to truth itself.

Because trauma-informed systems are not built by silencing the alarm. They are built by learning to hear it and respond with courage.

And I, for one, will continue to listen to the voices that help us rememberโ€”even when remembering asks more of us than forgetting ever will.

05/01/2026

I sat with this before recording.

Because this isnโ€™t just about policy.
Itโ€™s about people.
Belonging.
Whose voice is heardโ€”and whose is not.

We are watching something erode that generations fought to build.

And I keep coming back to this:

If you benefit from the system, you are responsible for changing it.

Not perfectly.
Not all at once.
But intentionally. Courageously. Together.

This is the work.

In healthcare, we are often taught to:
โ€ผ๏ธ push through
โ€ผ๏ธ stay composed
โ€ผ๏ธ keep going

But equanimity is something different.

It is the ability to:
๐Ÿฉท stay present
๐Ÿฉท stay grounded
๐Ÿฉท stay connected

even in the midst of intensity.

It allows us to:
๐Ÿฉท respond instead of react
๐Ÿฉท hold space without becoming overwhelmed
๐Ÿฉท remain human in environments that can easily pull us out of ourselves

This is a core element of trauma-informed careโ€”and a practice that supports both caregivers and those we serve.

If you are looking for a way to cultivate this in your work and life,

What if healing doesnโ€™t require forgiveness?

What if it begins with something even more foundational

Dignity.

Dignity is not something we earn.
It is something we carryโ€”always.

And when it is violated, our bodies know.
Our hearts know.
Our stories hold the imprint.

But hereโ€™s the shift that changes everything:

โžก๏ธ We can name what was violated.
โžก๏ธ We can validate our own experience.
โžก๏ธ We can reclaim our dignityโ€”whether we forgive or not.

Because healing isnโ€™t about excusing harm.
Itโ€™s about no longer being defined by it.

From โ€œthis was done to meโ€ โ†’ to โ€œthis is how I choose to live forward.โ€

Thatโ€™s where freedom begins.

Healthcare systems are often under pressure to do more with less. Family-centered care is sometimes viewed as โ€œextra.โ€ But what we are seeing is the opposite.

When families are meaningfully included:
โœ… Errors are reduced
โœ… Readmissions can decrease
โœ… Care plans are better understood and followed
โœ… Transitions to home are more successful

All of this has real financial implications.

But more importantlyโ€”it reflects a shift from: ๐˜๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ โ†’ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ, ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ

Family-centered care is not a cost. It is an investment in doing care well.
