Boston Meisner Acting Classes

Boston Meisner Acting Classes New York style Meisner acting training in Boston. The Meisner Technique is THE foundational acting technique, taught widely in New York and LA.

It brings an incredible level of spontaneity and authenticity to scripted work. Because of this, it's an absolute necessity for film, because the camera picks up every microexpression. But on stage, it is every bit as important, because audiences expect more than presentation--actors need to LIVE the work. Lyralen Kaye, who studied with Fred Kareman at Carnegie Hall, brings her unique take, incorp

orating mindfulness, body truth and movement, so that actors are authentic head to toe, fully alive in their bodies, and riveting in auditions and performances. Another Country’s Upcoming 2014 Meisner Classes

Spring and Summer, 2014

Level 1- Repetition into Scenes. Held at the Boston Playwrights Theatre on Tuesday nights from 7-10-pm starting July 15, this 6 week class introduces students to body truth, the best way to deepen presence, then introduces the famous Meisner repetition exercise. The final weeks are spent on the immediate application of Meisner work to connected movement and to film scenes, so that students leave after only 6 weeks with an understanding of the Meisner foundation work, able to create in the moment and to bring passion to their auditions. $250. Meisner & the Body: Meisner Actors learn to be truthful and authentic, to use body truth to deepen presence, and to commit fully to every moment. But what do you do when playing a character very unlike your day-to-day self? This 3 week course, held at the Boston Playwrights Theatre on Wednesday nights, starting July 16th, teaches actors to create characters by connecting to areas of the body and to archetypal images to which we all relate. Keeping a focus on the different responses and body experiences this creates, actors will work in the Meisner style in pairs to create the deeply connected scenes the technique inspires--but from a physically centered character. Greater range, creative freedom and castability are the result! $175, $150 if paid by June 15. And this fall, look for Playing Full Out (Level 2), another Meisner, Mindfulness and Movement Series as well as Intro to Meisner at Boston Casting. I have made a commitment to myself to put my work out into the world in 2024/2025. Yesterday and today it was plays on the New Play Exchange. I put up:

Murder by Psychotherapy
The Reincarnation of the Children of Llyr
My Mother and the Nun
Vessel of Glass

I will next put up:

They Named Us Mary (my very first play, still love it)
Saint John the Divine in Iowa
Rescue

True confession: I have, in addition to these 7 plays, 2 completed screenplays, 3 memoirs, a novel, a novella, and 2 novels in progress. Also 2 completed poetry manuscripts.

IT'S FREAKING RIDICULOUS!

I can't keep up with myself. I find it hard to focus on what to market when, so I switch focus and some things don't get done.

But you know, maturity means mortality is closer and I just want to let it all go.

To all you artists out there...do not go to your grave with your song unsung. Every song is worth hearing. I have long known we have to work so hard to be on our own side, especially in this country, which puts less of its GNP toward the arts than any first world country.

Sing it, baby. Just sing it.

Best line I heard today: All the dating apps should be one app entitled: WHAT'S LEFT OVER.

Leslie Jones, I love you.

Last night I started an improv class in which we will be working on the HAROLD! I haven't done that since grad school. OMG, I was so lit up after! I want to start an all AFAB nonbinary, trans man/women Meisner-trained (by me, of course) comedy improv troupe on the North Shore that performs A LOT! Because, guess what? I create my own characters so I don't have to play cis women!!!!!!!

I love acting, I love acting, I love acting SO MUCH! F**k the dating apps forever!

So if you haven’t seen STRANGE LOOP at the BCA, it’s better than it was on Broadway. I have said this exactly never about any show in Boston. There are tickets on Art Boston for today which is the last night. $46 to sit in the Orchestra. I almost want to go back and that would be the third time.

Why is it better in Boston? The direction is impeccable and brilliant. In New York City the self-referential part of the play seemed a little sophomoric because of the way it was played and directed. Here the self-referential part of the play is so conscious and funny that it adds to the overall brilliance.

Also, there are a lot of references to Tyler Perry, and then the costuming adds to the comedy and the acting references Tyler Perry style acting, and it all weaves together. It’s in the writing, but this is a Director, who knew how to realize it.

Finally, the lead is stunning. He plays the angst of the main character with the kind of heart that one Jennifer Hudson and Oscar for Dreamgirls. Talking about leaving it all on the stage. He’s funny, his physicality is amazing, and his heart is huge.

The ambition and reach of the plays realized. I could go on and on. See it there’s only one day left.

I do a second Substack post a lot because...I am RIDICULOUSLY prolific! The second one this week is also related to writing...it's about giving and receiving artistic feedback. Because I am a Pisces and survived a degree in THE WRITER SITS AND SAYS NOTHING AS PEOPLE SAY WHATEVER THEY WANT ABOUT THE WRITER'S WORK, I started a business in which the writer had more agency. It's a thing: p**s me off and I start businesses.
It's a living, as they say in RENT.
