Center for Design, CAMD Northeastern University

Center for Design, CAMD Northeastern University The Center for Design at the College of Arts Media and Design is Northeastern’s platform for interdisciplinary design research.

The Center for Design is Northeastern’s platform for interdisciplinary design research; it’s a space for collaborative research activities and a hub for connecting the actors of the design eco-system. It aims at sharing knowledge and practices, shaping common tools and methods, strengthening a unified disciplinary ground. The complexity of the grand challenges surrounding health, security, mobilit

y, sustainability and democracy demands a long-term shared research effort that crosses disciplinary boundaries. Design as an ‘interdisciplinary and integrative discipline’–with its capacity to map the complex dynamics of an issue, foresee its evolution, and shape tangible and intangible interfaces, experiences, services and systems–can empower the network between and across disciplines. Design also facilitates the cross-disciplinary discourse itself through innovative communication methods, and as a ‘third discipline’ mediates across humanics. The Center for Design opens up a new space for these interdisciplinary exchanges; it is where the design research agenda is collectively shaped and innovative solutions are collaboratively conceived and developed through joint research initiatives. Building solid ground for the bridges that CAMD faculty members have already established internally and promoting new collaborations with other areas both within and beyond Northeastern University, the Center for Design gathers the critical mass needed to leverage existing research initiatives, providing them a fertile environment to grow and systematically sustain them.

As we begin the new academic year, the Center for Design is excited to welcome these three new affiliate members! This group expands our interdisciplinary design research agenda, both locally in Boston and across the global network. We invite you to learn more about these affiliates as we ignite their involvement with the CfD.

👤 Myo Chung: https://camd.northeastern.edu/people/myojung-chung/
A previous CfD Bridges Fellow for the 2025-2026 academic year, her affiliation advances the Center’s presence at the intersection of design research, misinformation and journalism.

👤 Todd Linkner: https://camd.northeastern.edu/people/todd-linkner/
His affiliation, anchored by his work on the Polygraphs research project, enhances the Center’s connections with students and other educational programs, and with the Northeastern University London network.

👤 Victor Zappi: https://camd.northeastern.edu/people/victor-zappi/
His affiliation extends the Center's reach into design practices within engineering, through his work developing NU Oakland's Engineering Design program, and into research on human-AI interaction in creative and learning contexts.

What role does design research play in industry, what is it actually called, and what gets lost in translation between the studio, the boardroom and the lab?

The first installment of our Fall 2026 CfD Conversations Series explores where its methods and mindsets are already at work, and what opportunities emerge when academia and industry understand each other better. From career paths for emerging researchers to ways organizations can leverage design expertise, the conversation will connect perspectives from both sides.

Join moderator Paolo Ciuccarelli and panelists Tucker Marion, Marta Szpilewska and Mary Lou Tierney on Thursday, September 24 at 5:30 p.m. for this hybrid event.

The event is presented in partnership with the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Boston Chapter.

CfD affiliate member Mike Frengel recently presented the Mobi-lyze project at the 31st International Conference on Auditory Display, held in Barcelona. This project is a sonification application for historical insulin pump data designed to complement existing visual data review workflows in quarterly endocrinology consultations for patients with Type 1 diabetes.

Great work, team! Pedro Cruz, Mike Frengel, Nathanael Lee, Danny Li

Alpha Yacob Arsano’s Bridges Fellowship will continue into the Fall 2026 semester! 👏

Her project, “Measuring the Hidden Heat: Linking Design, Health, and Community in Addis Ababa,” has created new threads that the research team intends to follow. They are looking to build on the groundwork from the past year, extending their research approach outside of Addis Ababa and into other fast-urbanizing, warming cities across Africa.

We are excited to continue supporting this work and look forward to sharing more soon!

This summer, the Center for Design launched a new collaboration with the Northeastern University Rural Health Interdisciplinary Collaborative (NURHIC) and the Northeastern University Library’s Digital Repository Service (DRS)

The team members from each organization are in the process of creating a dynamic website that will showcase and highlight NURHIC’s work, while using materials from the DRS archive collection to tell the story of its impact and initiatives.

We are excited to see what will come from these new partnerships, and we will share updates on the publication of the archive website soon!

New book alert! Members of the Center for Design contributed to two chapters of the book, “Increasing Participatory Engagement through Technology and Design: New Approaches for Participation,” edited by Mari Suoheimo, Jonna Häkkilä and Ravi Mahamuni. This book is a broad-ranging edited collection that highlights the role that technology can play in increasing community engagement in participatory design, now and in the future.

CfD core faculty member Miso Kim co-wrote chapter three, “Living Law Labs as Public Sites of Participatory AI: Experimental Infrastructures for Ethical AI Futures,” with Jules Rochielle Sievert and Yue Ang.

CfD Associate Director Estefania Ciliotta and core faculty member Michael Arnold Mages co-wrote chapter four, “Democracy by Design: Applying Latin American Lessons to Boston's First Participatory Budgeting Process,” with Maria Fernanda Ramirez and Angelique C-Dina.

Congrats to these teams for the successful publication of this book!
