I’ve started this post over and over because I genuinely don’t know what to say.

Dom was brilliance personified.

I knew him through Keya, and every single time I had the privilege of being in his presence, I was in awe of him. His talent was extraordinary, but somehow that wasn’t even the most remarkable thing about him. He was kind. He was humble. He was generous with what he knew. And he had this presence that you simply couldn’t teach.

Watching him work and teach was something special. He understood hair on a level that made you want to shut up, pay attention and learn everything you could from him.

The last time I saw Dom, we talked and laughed and hugged. I had no idea it would be the last time. I’m having a really hard time wrapping my head around that.

I am so grateful that Keya brought this angel into my life and that I got to know him, learn from him, laugh with him and witness his magic.

My heart is absolutely broken for every person who loved him.

What a loss for the industry and the world.

Rest easy, King Dom 👑 You were truly one of a kind. 💔

Sometimes the formula isn’t the fu***ng problem. 😂

Your guest goes home and lives an entire life with that hair.

Different water.
Different lighting.
Different shampoo.
Hot tools.
Sun.
Swimming.
And yes…whatever random shampoo happened to be sitting in their hotel shower. 🙋🏻‍♀️

I used the hotel shampoo and watched my own color get yanked out.

THIS is why candid conversations during the consultation matter.

Ask what they’re washing with. Ask how often. Ask about their water. Ask what changed between appointments.

Because before you’re hiding in the back room tweaking a formula that may have been perfect, make sure the formula was actually the problem.

Good formulation matters.

But so does understanding what happens to that formula after your guest leaves your chair.

Hey friends. I’m fu***ng exhausted. 😂

THIS is the kind of s**t I deal with while trying to share education that can help you, your guests, and the health of their hair.

Here’s the thing…

I fu***ng LOVE being challenged.

Talk chemistry to me.
Talk manufacturing to me.
Bring me research.
Tell me you learned something completely different.

We can nerd the f**k out together.

And if you’ve got information that changes my understanding of something? EVEN BETTER. That’s how education works.

What we don’t need is to jump from disagreeing with someone’s education to assuming they’re cutting corners, chasing money, overbooking themselves, or running themselves into the ground.

Had this conversation started differently, Kenneth and I probably could’ve had a pretty fantastic back and forth because I have an extensive background in manufacturing and cosmetic chemistry.

Instead, I made him a video. 😂

And invited him to class.

Because disagreement doesn’t bother me.

Condescension does.

We can challenge each other’s information without questioning each other’s integrity.

And I think our industry would be a whole lot fu***ng smarter if we did more of that.

Does putting color under heat make you a little nervous? 👀

Here’s the thing: WARMTH doesn’t automatically equal damage.

Warmth helps speed up chemical reactions. That means when it’s used intentionally, you may be able to get the result you need in less processing time.

So instead of thinking:

🔥 Dryer = scary

Think:

🔥 Warmth = faster reaction

The important part is understanding what you’re working with, what you’re trying to accomplish, and when heat makes sense.

And please remember…

Don’t tell the color it’s under the dryer. It doesn’t know. 😂

Understanding the chemistry takes a whole lot of fear out of formulation.

You did all that work to create the color…

and then faded some of it before your guest even left the salon. 😬

Yep. It can happen.

A “gloss” or “glaze” isn’t automatically just a shiny little finishing treatment.

Depending on what’s actually IN that formula, you may be introducing ingredients that can affect the color you just worked so hard to create.

And this is exactly why I keep yelling about ingredients. 😂

I don’t care what the front of the bottle calls it.

Gloss.
Glaze.
Toner.
Shine treatment.

Turn it around.

What’s the pH?
What’s creating that pH?
Is there developer involved?
Are there surfactants in there?
What is this formula actually designed to DO?

Because if your goal is color retention, every product you put on that hair before your guest walks out the door matters.

Stop trusting the name on the front.

OH HEY 👋 Can we talk about why most of you still don’t feel confident recommending take home to your guests?

You’ve taken the classes.

I have a genuine question.

If you’re not an educator...

Why do you feel the need to recommend a specific color line or brand every time we talk about science?

I’m honestly curious.

My page has always been about understanding why something works, not convincing you that one brand is better than another.

Because once you understand the science...

You can make better decisions with the products you already own.

That’s why you’ll rarely hear me tell you to buy more stuff.

I’d rather teach you to use what you already have better.

Why do you think we’re so quick to defend brands instead of discussing the chemistry?
