Dawnn Pauline Bituin, MD, MMSc ‘26 had her thesis “‘Why Can’t She Just Leave?’: Pathways of Liberation from Intimate Partner Violence, a Mixed Methods Study in Mabinay, Negros Oriental, Philippines” featured in the August 2026 Mass General Brigham OB-GYN Global newsletter.

For this thesis, Dawnn and her research team used a mixed-methods approach to explore women’s multifaceted pathways to liberation from intimate partner violence (IPV) including psychosocial, physical, and legal separation. They examined how sociodemographic and partner characteristics, forms of abuse, and support systems influence women’s journeys toward freedom, complemented by in-depth interviews capturing their lived experiences and perspectives.

This past week we welcomed the incoming students to campus. We had several zoom orientations over the summer, so it was great to meet everyone in person! The Harvard Medical School Department of Global Health and Social Medicine hosts two masters programs: the Harvard Medical School Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery and the Harvard Medical School Master of Science in Media, Medicine, and Health. We hosted orientation sessions for each program individually and also team building exercises for both programs. These are some photos from our Friday team building sessions, a fun way to get to know each other!

Alum Galal Elshishiney, MBBS, MMSc ‘22 is the Head of the Central Administration for Healthcare Quality at the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population. Galal was in Boston for an education program and stopped by to say hello to the new students during our orientation lunch. He talked about his MMSc-GHD thesis project “Among the Egyptian Population, Identifying and Understanding the Causes of Change in Mortality Among Non-COVID-19 Patients in Comparison with the Previous Year's Records”. He discussed how he built on that project and expanded it to a larger project for his PhD dissertation.

When asked what advice he had for students, he said to plan a thesis with a reasonable scope and focus on developing knowledge about research methodology. He said once you know the research methodology, you can develop a larger-scale project in the future.

Alum Jude Beauchamp MD, MMSc visited the MMSc-GHD office recently. Jude conducted his Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery thesis on tuberculosis care in Haiti. He then completed a residency in psychiatry. He was recently awarded PGY-3 Resident of the Year by One Brooklyn Health. He is now working as a Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow at Mass General Hospital and McLean Hospital at Harvard Medical School. It is always wonderful to see alumni and hear about the work they are doing!

We recently welcomed Odunayo Talabi, MD, MMSc ’22, for a conversation with alumni, faculty, and second-year students about SheltasHealth, the organization he founded to help ensure healthcare AI is useful in diverse contexts.

Odunayo came to the MMSc-GHD program with an entrepreneurial background, having founded PrettyHealthCare in Nigeria. His MMSc-GHD thesis focused on HPV vaccination in Nigeria, and his work later helped inform the Nigerian government’s national HPV vaccination campaign.

At the recent talk, Odunayo emphasized the importance of involving healthcare workers from diverse settings in the development and evaluation of AI models. He noted that Sheltas is building a global network of domain experts to help ensure healthcare AI is useful, equitable, and contextually appropriate.

As Odunayo shared:

“An efficiently evaluated and contextualized model favors everyone: the model builder who achieves a higher standard at lower cost, the patient who isn't ‘fine-tuned’ out of the algorithm, and the provider who meets the ethical requirements of their profession while delivering quality care at scale.”

Saravanan Thangarajan, MDS, MMSc, MBA is first author on the article “Maternal immobility: care, labour, indoor heat exposure, and climate governance in Tamil Nadu” published in Climate and Development.

This article comes from the research Saravanan did for his Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery thesis project. For the project, he worked with faculty Nadeem Kasmani, Julia Ruiz Pozuelo and Kari Nadeau.

Congratulations to Saravanan and to the entire team who worked on the research study on the publication of this article.

Edwin has many years of leadership experience in health care as described in the article below. His MMSc-GHD thesis was “The Analysis of the Provider, Payer, and Regulator Stakeholders’ Understanding and Acceptance of the Universal Healthcare Law in Three Provinces in the Philippines: A Qualitative Study.”

Benito Isaac, MMSc ‘23 is first author on the article “Investigating Strategies for Sustaining Modern Health Information Systems for Enhanced Care Delivery in Fragile Resource-Constrained Settings Through Electronic Medical Record Implementation in Haiti: Qualitative Study” published in JMIR Publications. This article is from research Benito conducted for his Master of Science in Global Health Delivery program. He examined record keeping systems in Haiti to understand the process and elements needed to implement electronic medical record systems.

Phuong Nguyen graduated from the Harvard Medical School Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery in May 2026 - our first graduate from Vietnam. Her thesis was titled “Understanding Mental Health Issues Facing Young Women in the Hmong Community: A Qualitative Descriptive Study in Sapa, Vietnam.”
