Of course we were going to celebrate Eat Outside Day!

Sometimes the random little holidays are the best excuse to change things up a bit.
Tea Time Together usually happens around our table, but some of our favorite weeks are the ones where we pack everything up, head outside, and let the fresh air become part of the lesson.

A little art. A little poetry. Something good to eat. Kids sprawled out on a blanket instead of sitting in their usual spots. It’s such a simple change, but somehow it makes the whole afternoon feel special.

And with summer winding down and the -ber months just around the corner, I’m feeling extra sentimental about these last warm, slow days. There’s still time for one more picnic, one more meal outside, one more afternoon of soaking it all in before the season shifts.

So today, we’re taking tea time outside. And if you needed an excuse to do the same, this is it!

More Than Meets the Eye. 🐈

One of the featured works of art in our August Tea Time Together Guides is Sara Holding a Cat by American Impressionist Mary Cassatt, our featured August artist.

At first glance, it’s simply a sweet portrait of a young girl cuddling a cat.

But look closer.

Cassatt was fascinated by ordinary moments of childhood and family life. She painted children reading, playing, resting, sitting with their mothers... and here, simply loving a pet.

Notice the way Sara holds the cat close. There’s nothing stiff or formal about it. Cassatt captures the kind of affection that feels completely natural, as if we’ve stepped into the room and happened upon this quiet moment.

Now look at the brushwork. The edges are soft, with loose, visible strokes rather than precise detail. As an Impressionist, Cassatt was more interested in capturing the feeling of a moment than making every line perfectly sharp.

There’s another detail that makes this painting especially meaningful.

Cassatt painted Sara Holding a Cat in 1908, late in her career, as her eyesight was beginning to deteriorate. Within a few years, her vision would become so poor that she could no longer continue painting.

And yet here she was, still paying attention to something so small and ordinary: a child and her cat in a quiet moment of affection.

Maybe that’s part of what makes Cassatt’s work so special. She reminds us that ordinary family life is worth looking at closely.

Kinda chic to believe childhood can be both beautiful and rigorous.

Sometimes we’re given the impression that a rigorous education has to look serious all the time.

But beauty doesn’t have to take the place of rigor.

You can raise kids who read great books, wrestle with big ideas, study deeply, and work hard and make room for art, music, poetry, tea, wonder, and meaningful conversation.

In fact, I think they feed each other. Beauty gives our minds space to breathe, and that rest allows us to return to rigorous learning with greater focus and curiosity.

That’s the kind of homeschool I strive to create. One where deep learning and a beautiful childhood aren’t competing priorities, but part of the same education.

There is room at the table for both rigor and wonder.

You really do not need a have a fancy tea set to make Tea Time feel special. ☕️✨

Some of my favorite cups and little serving pieces have come from thrift stores, TJ Maxx, dollar stores, and random local shops I happened to wander into.

I actually love it when everything is a little mismatched. There’s something so charming about a table that feels collected rather than perfectly coordinated. Letting each of your kids choose their own special mug or teacup can become part of the fun, and maybe even a little adventure of its own!

Tea Time was never meant to be another expensive homeschool project to pull together. It’s the time around the table that really matters.

There is something so refreshing about letting beautiful things simply be beautiful.

Sometimes we can just look closely. Listen. Read. Wonder out loud. Ask questions that spark curiosity and lead somewhere unexpected. Let the conversation wander.

That was a big part of why we created Tea Time Together. I wanted art, music, and poetry to have a real place in our homeschool, but I didn’t want them to feel like one more subject I had to plan, prep, and teach.

If you’re anything like me, this season is full of curriculum websites, comparison charts, weekly schedules, co-op registrations, and all the excitement (and pressure) of planning another homeschool year.

As you make your plans, don’t forget to plan for beauty. Plan for poetry. Great art. Music that stirs the soul. Time to gather around the table. Conversations that give you a window into your children’s hearts.

These moments shape who our children become. They cultivate curiosity, deepen relationships, and become the memories our children carry with them long after they’ve forgotten the details of the school year.
