For the ❄️first time in forever❄️.....I am not craving the routine of September and the school year and would much prefer a few more beach days with the ice cream queen.

There's a line I can't stop thinking about from a conversation I had with Najwa Zebian.

She talks about the person who broke you as someone who was, for a while, holding the pen to your story.

Taking it back isn't a metaphor she offers lightly. She's clear about what it costs. The moment you decide you no longer want your healing sitting in someone else's hands, you should expect to feel scared. Not because you're doing something wrong. Because you've spent a long time being comfortable with someone else deciding who you are.

There's a strange safety in that arrangement, even when it's painful. If things fall apart, there's a name attached to why.

Once you take the pen back, that's gone.

I see this constantly with clients trying to leave controlling relationships. The fear of taking the pen back rarely announces itself. It shows up as still checking in with the person who hurt you before making a decision. Waiting for their approval on who you're allowed to become next. Staying in the story where they're the main character and you're just reacting to them.

Writing your own story means you have to actually decide what happens in it.

Healing isn't the moment the fear goes away. It's the moment you pick up the pen anyway, still scared, and write something that's finally yours.

I reflected on it in Substack this week. Link in my story.

I used to hate seeing memories pop up on my phone from 2017/2018 because I was so exhausted and overwhelmed. Today this gem popped up from our first international solo adventure. It was important to me to keep traveling when I became a single mom even if it looked different than when I went previously. If you know me, you know we've kept it going for the past 9 years and my daughter falls in love with new places and new people.

I keep coming back to this line from my conversation with Najwa Zebian. So many of us spend years trying to locate the exact thing we did wrong, the thing that made someone treat us badly, as if there's a version of ourselves careful enough to have prevented it. There isn't. Somebody's decision to hurt you belongs to them. It always did.

Her new book, The One Who Broke You Can't Heal You, is out today. Linked in my stories.
