This week we’ve been sharpening up one of the classics: the loop choke. Simple doesn’t mean easy, and the deeper you get into the details the more dangerous it becomes. We worked through the fundamentals, how to create the right reactions, and some slick variations depending on how your training partner tries to defend.

That’s the beauty of Jiu Jitsu, the basics keep working at every level when you understand the details behind them. Small adjustments, timing, pressure, angles… suddenly a technique you’ve seen a hundred times starts feeling completely different.

Whether you’re brand new or have been training for years, there’s always another layer to uncover. Come learn with us, get some rounds in, and see why we love this stuff so much.
Get on the mats. We’ll help with the rest.

PS Shout out to who won her division at IBJJF Worlds by putting her opponent to sleep with this 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽

9 YEARS. 5 YEARS. ONE MISSION. 🔥

From day one at SMAA HQ to building something special at SMAA TK, this journey has always been about more than Jiu Jitsu; it’s always been about the people who show up, put in the work, and grow together.

We’re celebrating it the only way we know how… on the mats.

Wednesday at SMAA is where the work gets done. 🔥

Coach Nubby is leading the charge all day, setting the tone from the first round at lunch to the final rolls of the night. Whether you’re sharpening your pace, building your fundamentals, or leveling up your decision-making in live exchanges, today’s the day to get better.

🥋 NoGi at Noon👊 Kids NoGi at 4:30 PM🧠 Eco / CLA at 5:30 PM🥋 Gi at 6:30 PM

Different classes, same mission: show up, learn, push your limits, and leave better than you walked in.

There’s something special about Wednesdays at SMAA, the mats stay busy, the room stays sharp, and Coach Nubby keeps the momentum high all day long.

No excuses. Pick your class(es), grab your gear, and come put in the work. Your future self will thank you.

In true Throw Back Thursday form we are going back one month to Celebrate Coach Rob Becoming Professor Rob 3/9/2026.

There are promotions that mark time, and then there are promotions that represent legacy. We’re celebrating Coach Rob becoming Professor Rob, and that title means so much more than a set of stripes on a Black Belt.

It represents years of showing up.Years of pouring into students.Years of staying after class to answer one more question, coaching one more round, and helping someone believe they’re capable of more than they thought possible.

Professor Rob has been a cornerstone of SMAA since the very beginning. He has helped shape the culture of our academy through consistency, leadership, inspirational speeches, stalwartness, and the kind of care that leaves a lasting impact on everyone who steps on the mats. From working closely with our teen and tween students to pushing adults beyond the limits they place on themselves, he has a gift for meeting people where they are and helping them rise.

He doesn’t just teach technique, he teaches belief, discipline, resilience, grit, and what it means to keep moving forward when things get hard. So many of our students are better athletes, better teammates, and better people because of the time, passion, and knowledge he so freely gives.

We are incredibly proud to call him Professor Rob. More than that, we are grateful to have him as a part of our team, sharing what he knows and what he so clearly loves about this sport.

Congratulations, Professor Rob. This title is well earned, and SMAA is stronger because of everything you’ve built here. 🖤🥋

SMAA FAMILY,

I WANTED TO TAKE A MOMENT TO SHARE SOMETHING CLOSE TO OUR HEARTS.

MANY OF YOU KNOW THE FONTANA FAMILY, THEY WERE PART OF THE ORIGINAL GROUP THAT HELPED BUILD SMAA INTO WHAT IT IS TODAY. EVEN THOUGH LIFE HAS TAKEN THEM OFF THE MATS FOR NOW, THEY REMAIN AN IMPORTANT PART OF THIS COMMUNITY, AND WE CARE DEEPLY ABOUT THEM.

T.J. IS CURRENTLY FACING A SERIOUS MEDICAL JOURNEY. AFTER FOUR YEARS ON DIALYSIS, THERE IS FINALLY HOPE, HIS SON KODY IS A MATCH FOR A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT. IT’S AN INCREDIBLE BLESSING, BUT IT ALSO BRINGS CHALLENGES.

KODY WILL NEED TIME AWAY FROM WORK TO RECOVER, AND WITH THAT COMES THE ADDED WEIGHT OF MISSED INCOME, TRAVEL, AND EVERYDAY EXPENSES FOR HIS FAMILY. AS A COMMUNITY, THIS FEELS LIKE AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME TOGETHER AND SUPPORT ONE OF OUR OWN.

WE HAVE OVER 200 MEMBERS HERE AT SMAA, AND IF EACH OF US CONTRIBUTED EVEN $25, WE’D BE WELL ON OUR WAY TO COVERING THEIR GOAL AND HELPING EASE THAT BURDEN.

IF YOU FEEL LED TO HELP, CONTRIBUTIONS CAN BE SENT TO WAYNE, AND WE WILL GATHER EVERYTHING TOGETHER AND PRESENT IT TO THE FONTANA FAMILY ON MAY 1ST AS PART OF OUR SMAA ANNIVERSARY MONTH CELEBRATION.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXPECTATION, WE SIMPLY WANTED TO SHARE WHAT’S GOING ON AND GIVE THOSE WHO MAY WANT TO SUPPORT A WAY TO DO SO. MORE THAN ANYTHING, PLEASE KEEP THE FONTANA FAMILY IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS IN THE WEEKS AND MONTHS AHEAD.

WE’RE GRATEFUL TO BE PART OF A COMMUNITY THAT LOOKS OUT FOR EACH OTHER.
Wayne

No excuses this week.

Too hot for the Gi? Good…NoGi runs Monday through Friday at 5:30pm. Show up and get it in.

Can’t make it after work? We’ve got you covered with 12:00–1:00pm classes Monday through Friday.

Lunch not your thing? Early morning grinders (sunrise savages) Tuesday & Thursday at 6:00am. Different crowd, same work.

There’s a time for everyone. The only question is whether you’re going to take it.

Make the time now… next year you will be grateful you did.
Stronger. Sharper. Better.
