Lawn burweed or “sticker weed” is a winter annual that germinates in October and grows all winter long. Next April, it produces the burs that are capsules that contain burweed seed. To avoid the stickers in the spring, you must treat lawn burweed during fall and winter.

For lawns plagued with stickers, the recommended practice is to make an application of both pre-emergent herbicides in the fall followed by a post-emergent herbicide in the winter. The plant becomes highly difficult to control once the burs are formed. View our publication for control practices: https://tinyurl.com/LawnBurweed

Fall is a great time to remove unwanted vines. Some vines provide food and shelter for wildlife, but aggressive growth can quickly take over trees, shrubs, fences and other landscape features.

Annual vines, such as morning glory, can often be pulled up by hand, roots and all. Perennial woody vines are more stubborn and may require additional control measures to prevent them from returning. You can read more about how to remove certain vines here: https://tinyurl.com/2kw2vmbt

Fall officially starts today, and many garden centers are filling up with mums!

For the longest-lasting display, look for plants that are just beginning to show color rather than those with many opened blooms. Keep them watered and make sure they're getting plenty of sun. You can read more about selecting and caring for mums here: https://tinyurl.com/3n4nuwad
