Takeaways from our youth class today.

Dillan (15) : I learned about doing the best you can within the bounds of the regulations and rules given. Like when building houses in portland, there are permits and inspections. Or with putting an extra building on your property you need to work within the regulations, but you can still be a creative problem solver!
Hazel (13) : Sometimes helping other people can be hard. Take the first step first. Look at the whole picture, then take the first step. Sometimes you find out that wasn't the right first step, but it still helped you gain clarity on what the first step should be. And you need to take care of yourself before helping others.

The main focus was on Community Stewardship. They each learned what they were ready to and excited about.

Another great day at TJEd! Our Scholars went on a field trip to make applesauce. Yum!

Our Love of Learners did some Explosive science experiments to learn about being proactive verses reactive. And of course the wonderful Spark Stations!

And our Core class drew in their journals while listening to a story about The Good Samaritan then re-enacted it, did some relay races, and painting.

School is back in session! Our Core class read “The Three Little Pigs” and built houses out of sticks and gum drops.

Our Love of Learners began their journey of learning Habits of Happy Kids and enjoyed time at the new “Spark Stations.”

And our Scholars went on a field trip to McMenamins in Troutdale to learn about the gardens and nature there.

Are you intimidated about homeschooling your high schooler? Fearful? Overwhelmed? Nervous?

I've noticed a lot of families stop homeschooling at high school. What a tragedy! That is just when Scholar Phase is getting good, and the student has the time and ability to get a quality leadership education. Lookout Academy knows how to support and inspire 12–18-year-olds! After years of hearing the phrase "The Socratic Method," I'm finally starting to understand! Socrates taught by asking questions. Questions lead to discussion, which opens all participants to thinking! That's exactly what we're looking for. We want those we mentor to learn to think!

I'm enjoying practicing the Socratic Method on my kids at home. I'll be ready to mentor some great discussing and thinking when our commonwealth starts up again in the Fall.

I just finished the Georgics training which will be our Scholar Project (ages 12-18) this year.
We'll be exploring the principles learned from the land that also founded our great nation. One of the principles is the connection between Work and Joy!
