Parents, Families, and Caregivers,
Does your child ever shrug their shoulders or give you a “deer in the headlights” look when you ask about what they just read?
If so, you’re not alone—and you’re not without tools.
Helping with Reading at Home from the Indiana Dyslexia Toolkit is packed with strategies to skilled reading with comprehension. We’ve been sharing some of them one at a time so you can try them without feeling overwhelmed.
This week’s spotlight routine, Partner Summarizing (p. 9), is a simple routine that helps children pause, think, and explain what they’ve just read in their own words. It’s a powerful way to build comprehension and stop that “I don’t get it” feeling.
Why it matters: Skilled readers notice when they lose meaning and have tools to get back on track. Partner Summarizing gives kids a way to do just that.
