Revitalizing Education: The Creative Task before Us

As we ponder the past and the many transgressions that now beset our work in the field of education, we must consider the future and the tasks that lie ahead of us. We must imagine what might be if we hope to dream of a better tomorrow for our children and the teachers that serve them. To that end, the South Atlantic Philosophy of Education society presents this call for papers for the 59th conference.

We invite proposals for papers to be submitted for presentation at the 59th SAPES meeting that address the conference theme, the organizing questions, and all other philosophical topics and questions that impact education and learning. The program committee welcomes proposals in the field of philosophy of education, social foundations of education, as well as related conceptual and theoretical work.

We particularly invite practitioners to join us to explore the theoretical aspects and implications of their work.

Individual Paper Proposals:
Individuals should submit proposals that do not exceed 250 words via email attachment in Word or PDF format to: [email protected]
We also invite groups of presenters to submit proposals for panel sessions. In your submission, please identify a session chair, supply a description of the session's
theme, as well as a proposal of 250 words from each individual panelist. Be sure to label your proposal as a symposium.

Submission Deadline: June 1, 2014.
Proposals will be accepted and authors notified by June 30, 2014.

On Friday, March 28, we will be hosting our annual Spring Symposium. The event will be held on the Appalachian campus in room 421 of the Belk Library and Information Commons, beginning at 9:30 am.

We welcome doctoral alums, faculty, students, and all friends of the program to join us for dialogue on the theme of "affirmative leadership in complex times." During the symposium, we will have a panel of speakers including current students and program graduates, sharing leadership insights from local and international perspectives. We will also honor the 2014 winner of the Alice P. Naylor Outstanding Dissertation Award.

Grant awarded to Cohort 21 member, Courtney Baines Smith

Congratualations to Courtney Baines Smith of Cohort 21 for recieving a Creating a Healthy, Just, and Sustainable Society Student Research Grant. Courtney's research project, "Learning Garden Teacher-Training: Effects on Teacher Knowledge and Attitudes" involves installing a learning garden at ASU's Child Development Center, hosting a training workshop for the Preschool teachers and assistants, and assessing how the workshop affects teacher knowledge and attitudes of using gardens as an interdisciplinary teaching tool for sustainability. She is hopeful that this research will help shed light on overcoming one of the obstacles of successful school gardens which is teacher knowledge and support. She is most excited about helping to bring the delights and benefits of a learning garden to Pre-K children

Courtney will be utilizing the help of students from the newly created Sustainability and Environmental Education Club (SEEC) and they will begin work in March, 2014. If you would like to donate time or materials to the garden, you may contact Courtney at

Current Doctoral Student Workshop Information: "Navigating the IRB Process" - Feb. 10, 2014 at 10AM in 1041 Anne Belk Hall - This workshop will provide information about the regulations that govern the participation of human subjects in research in the United States. Facilitators will describe the purpose of the IRB, the requirements for conducting research involving human subjects, and the types of IRB review. Focus will be on explaining the main sections of the application form and what makes a successful application. Faculty interested in human subjects-based research, including scholarship that involves students and classes at Appalachian State University, are encouraged to attend. Cama Duke, a graduating member the doctoral program, has been selected for induction into the Cratis D. Williams Society of Outstanding Graduates. Cama represents the top one to two percent of approximately 280 students in the Cratis D. Williams Graduate School's graduating class, and selection into this society is based on faculty recommendations, stellar academic performance, engagement in respective disciplines, and accomplishments achieved in research or scholarly projects.
