Our Block 3 Elementary Education students from the Hickory Campus made such an impact in their first week of internship! 🍎✏️

During Block 3, students take on increased responsibility as they learn alongside experienced educators and prepare to teach a variety of lessons throughout the semester. This past week, our Hickory students read “Sea Bear” and many other engaging children’s books across the district in interactive read-aloud lessons. We are excited to watch them grow in confidence, strengthen their teaching skills, and build meaningful relationships with students!

We are incredibly thankful for our partnership with Catawba County schools and surrounding districts and especially for the clinical educators who welcome, mentor, and support our future teachers. 💛🖤

Students in the Collegiate Middle Grades Association (CMLA) at App State helped with a recruiting event in Plemmons Student Union. We had folks create a six-word story. We'll be there this Wednesday, September 16th and every other Wednesday after that during the Fall Semester with other fun activities. Come join us!

Throwback Thursday ✨ We are asking our faculty to flash back to their K-12 teaching days - starting with Dr. YeJun Bae!

Here are Dr. Bae’s teaching stats:
🍎 Public school teaching - 11.5 years
🤓College teaching - 7 years (and counting)
🩷Approximate students served - about 1,205 students across K-12 and college

Her advice for new teachers? “You’ve prepared enough. Trust your training, be confident, and let curiosity guide your lessons. Focus on learning from each day rather than chasing perfection; students notice calm, curiosity, and a teacher who’s willing to grow.”

Thank you for all you do, Dr. Bae! We are so lucky to have you!

Before the semester began, the Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum department held a faculty retreat where hard work and planning for the upcoming year took place. Some of our faculty members took an ice cream walk to celebrate the start of the new semester! 🍦

Throwing back to a June summer camp at App State Hickory! At Hmong KUV Camp, a Hmong language and culture camp, kids learned from local cultural experts and had visits from a local farmer. The camp was organized and run by community member Elizabeth Thao, and our department supported the effort by helping her secure grant monies and through volunteering. 🌽 🧑‍🌾

From Boone to Hickory, our Elementary and Middle Grades majors in the Reich College of Education have had an amazing first week of classes! 🍎📚
From red light games in seminar and connecting trains, to recording ideas about learning, creating geometry monsters, and even finding a “sole mate,” our preservice teachers are already learning, collaborating, creating, and building community. We can’t wait to see where this journey takes them! 💛

Our Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum has been named the 2026 recipient of the Hickory Development Award — one of the inaugural Hickory Champion Awards.

This recognition highlights the department’s leadership in launching two innovative programs at App State’s Hickory campus:
K–9 STEM Education Program
Part-time, night-time Elementary Education Program

Together, these programs are expanding access, supporting working educators, and strengthening the teacher pipeline across North Carolina.

We’re proud of the faculty and staff whose vision and dedication are making a lasting impact in our region.

Wrapping up Block 3 with so much pride as we celebrate and send off our Elementary Education majors into student teaching! 🎉

This group has put in an incredible amount of hard work this semester—showing up, growing, reflecting, and pushing themselves to become the teachers their future students deserve. Their dedication and commitment have been so evident every step of the way.

We are beyond proud of all they’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see the impact they will make in their classrooms. The next chapter starts now, and they are more than ready. 💛📚
