☀️📚 Looking Back at Our Summer Graduate Reading Clinics!

As we get ready for the start of another session in the Anderson Reading Clinic, we’re taking a look back at some of the wonderful learning that happened in our clinic this summer!

During the summer, our May and June Reading Clinics brought graduate students in literacy education together with children for individualized, one-to-one reading and writing instruction designed around each child’s strengths and needs.

Across both clinics, our graduate tutors assessed, planned, taught, reflected, and adjusted their instruction as they got to know their students. Just as importantly, they built meaningful relationships with the children and families who joined us throughout the summer. 💛

We’re so grateful to our graduate tutors and to the children and families who make our summer clinics such special experiences for everyone!

📚 The Anderson Reading Clinic at Appalachian State University is now accepting applications for Fall 2026 tutoring!

We provide FREE, individualized literacy tutoring for students in grades 2–5. Each enrolled child will receive 14 one-to-one tutoring sessions designed around their individual strengths and needs in areas such as:

📖 Reading accuracy & fluency
🔤 Phonics & word recognition
💬 Comprehension & vocabulary
✏️ Writing

To participate, children must be in grades 2–5 and commit to attending all 14 sessions.

📅 Fall 2026 Clinic Dates:
September 29
October 1, 8, 13, 15, 20, 27
November 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24

DATES: June 15, 16, 17, 18; June 22, 23, 24, 25; (children must attend ALL 8 sessions)
TIMES: 10AM-12PM or 1:00-3:00PM (tutoring time will be assigned by clinic staff)
TYPE OF INSTRUCTION: Intensive one-to-one instruction in reading, writing, and spelling based on the specific needs of the child. Each tutoring session is two hours long.
APPLICATION CRITERIA: This clinic is for children in grades K-12 who are currently experiencing significant difficulty in reading, writing, and/or spelling. Participating children must be present at all 8 days of instruction.

Last week, we wrapped up our Spring Semester Reading Clinic at Appalachian State’s Boone campus! 📚

Led by Dr. Ashley Pennell, Assistant Director of the Anderson Reading Clinic and Assistant Professor of Literacy Education, the clinic was supported by reading clinic supervisors Alyssa Parsels and Dylaney Ferguson -- who are both teachers in Watauga County Schools and graduates of Appalachian State’s Literacy Education Master’s Program. Parsels teaches 2nd grade at Valle Crucis School, and Ferguson teaches 3rd grade at Bethel School. Together, they supported both the children enrolled in the clinic and the teacher candidates participating in the experience.

During this clinic, forty elementary education teacher candidates completed a field experience as part of their Block 2 literacy coursework, each providing individualized tutoring to one of the children enrolled. Together, they delivered more than 250 hours of one-to-one literacy instruction to children in our community!

We’re incredibly proud of their dedication to learning, teaching, and supporting the children and families we serve in the Anderson Reading Clinic. 💛

A big thank you to our clinic families for their commitment over the past two months! Your dedication to bringing your children to twice-weekly sessions made this experience possible and meaningful for everyone involved. We are grateful for your partnership and for the opportunity to support your children’s literacy growth. 💛📚

📚 Now Accepting Applications: May Reading Clinic Session!

We’re excited to share that applications are now open for the May Session of the App State Reading Clinic! This upcoming clinic session will offer individualized reading and writing instruction for children who are in kindergarten through 5th grade who are in need of additional support in reading and writing.

May Clinic Details:
📔11 FREE one-to-one tutoring sessions
🗓️May 11-May 28 (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays)
⏰ Session options: 3:45-4:45 PM or 5:15-6:15 PM
📍Location: Appalachian State University campus
