It’s and this week, we feature Justine Hopkins, our Administrative Support Specialist and Business Manager!

Justine joined the Department of Mathematical Sciences in August 2026. She is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising. Before coming to Appalachian State, Justine worked in finance and payroll for Ashe County Schools and previously worked in management and staffing. In her role with Mathematical Sciences, she supports the department’s faculty, staff, and students and helps manage the day-to-day business operations of the department.

Originally from New Orleans—and still a loyal Saints fan—Justine now loves calling the High Country home. She has four children and is especially excited to welcome her first grandchild in February! She loves the changing seasons—hiking in the fall, cozy fires and snow in the winter, and floating the river in the summer. In her free time, you can usually find her sewing or tackling just about any DIY project she thinks she can handle.

This Friday, we will continue our colloquium series with a talk presented by Dr. Hyung-Joon Tag from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Tag's topic of discussion will be Daugavet Property and Geometry of Banach Spaces. This talk will take place in Edwin Duncan Hall, room 216, this Friday, September 18th at 3 pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

Geometrical structures of the unit ball of Banach spaces have provided useful information about certain classes of bounded linear operators on the spaces. In this talk, we focus on Banach spaces with the Daugavet property. Although the Daugavet property was originally described as an operator-theoretic phenomenon, it also has a geometric consequence on the unit ball, namely, every slice has diameter two. We will begin with the finite-dimensional setting, which only requires linear algebra, to motivate the related geometric notions, and then proceed to the infinite-dimensional setting, where the Daugavet property becomes meaningful, with necessary concepts from functional analysis. In the process, we also identify several geometric obstructions to this property.

It's and this week, we feature Mrs. Emily Morris.

Emily Morris graduated from Appalachian State in the Spring of 2018 with her Bachelor's in Mathematics, Secondary Education, and again in the Spring of 2019 with her Master's in Mathematics. She went on to teach for 7 years at Watauga High School and began teaching online courses for App State as an adjunct in 2023. As of this Fall, Emily is teaching full time as a Lecturer in the department.

Outside of teaching math, Emily enjoys hiking, camping, snowboarding, coaching cheerleading, and spending time with her family. She also loves to travel and would encourage anyone considering studying abroad to do so! She loves to help students understand and feel confident in their mathematical abilities, no matter what their goals are post-college.

We will be kicking off our colloquium series this semester with our research blast, featuring multiple speakers who will provide mini talks about their current research. Our three speakers for this week are Dr. Katie Mawhinney, Dr. Jacob Blazejewski, and Dr. Mark Ginn. Their talks will take place this Friday, September 11th, at 3 pm. The colloquium will take place at Edwin Duncan Hall in room 216 and virtually via Zoom. Titles for each talk are posted below. We look forward to seeing you there!

It's the first of the 2026 - 2027 school year, and we recognize Mr. Tyrel Winebarger.

Tyrel Winebarger is an experienced educator with a background in mathematics, statistics, and data analytics. He has taught college-level mathematics for more than a decade and has contributed extensively to educational research focused on self-directed learning and academic success. His work combines quantitative analysis with a commitment to improving educational opportunities and social mobility in rural and Appalachian communities.

While room numbers, furniture, and light fixtures might be different, some things remain the same. As we have done for many years, we welcomed students today to our first Departmental Tea in our new home in Edwin Duncan Hall. Today's goodies were provided by none other than our own emeritus faculty members, Drs. Holly and Jeff Hirst!
