Alumni Highlight Jessica Cottle: Jessica works as the Justice, Equality, and Community Project Archivist at Davidson College. Her work focuses on increasing the accessibility of archival materials to inspire transdisciplinary coursework in the humanities, promoting avenues for increased original student research, and developing reciprocal relationships with community partners – all in support of increased dialogue around issues of justice, equality, and community in the curriculum and with the public. She loves that every day she has the opportunity to learn something new. She really appreciated the way classes at App State blended hands-on learning and course readings.

Alumni Highlight Dr. Jason Hauser: Dr. Hauser is currently a professor at Auburn University and book review editor for Environmental History. He says the most satisfying part of teaching is introducing scholars outside of the humanities to history, many are shocked how applicable the content is to their broader academic lives and eventual careers. Alumni Highlight Chris Howard: Chris is one year into his job as an Army Special Operations Forces (ARSOF) historian. He has written several articles which have been published in Veritas: Journal of Army Special Operations History. Chris is an Army veteran and enjoys his job, he primarily writes for a military audience and veterans. His latest article can be found here.

“This Vest May Save Your Life!”: U.S. Army Body Armor from World War II to Present The adage ‘speed is security’ applies to vehicles, aircraft, or individual soldiers. But security, increased by armor, can reduce mobility. Since World War II, the U.S. Army has worked to develop body armor that acceptably balances these two competing factors.

Alumni Highlight: Dr. Jamie L. Goodall. Dr. Goodall is currently an Assistant Professor of Public History at Stevenson University in Maryland. Speaking about her time at Appalachian State University she says, “I loved the friendships I made and the great mentors I had during my time in the M.A. program. In particular, the mentorship I received from Dr. Sheila Baber Phipps changed the course of my life and I can't thank her enough for her support.” Thanks to our M.A. program she felt completely prepared going to the Ph.D. program at Ohio State University and thinks it helped to make her first year a smooth transition.

For any grad students interested in learning more about historic preservation there is still time to register for Preservation North Carolina’s Fall Conference November 7-8 in Raleigh. It is a great opportunity to meet others interested in preservation. Our students Sarah Shartzer and James Bregenser will be attending.

Grad Student Highlight: Bekkah Lynn Watkins. Bekkah is currently president of both the Graduate Student Government Association and the Graduate History Student Association. "The experience of being both the president of the Graduate History Student Association and the Graduate Student Government Association has been really rewarding. The roles are very different as the GHSA is much more relaxed and social than GSGA is. They are connected in the way that I keep GHSA in mind as I am planning agendas and discussions for GSGA. I find myself asking “what would the history students want changed, or offered?” I hope other departments and programs also have a group like GHSA so they can have their senator bring concerns to the student government and then bring solutions back. Graduate school can get lonely or boring without a solid group of friends and acquaintances to be able to talk through issues with or just to plan a social with and hang out. I think being involved in both GHSA and GSGA has 100% improved my graduate school experience. I have gotten closer to many of the other history students as well as had the chance to meet students from other departments which is harder in grad school since there aren’t gen eds where everyone takes random classes with random students."

Amy Joy Litterer won the History Department's first ever Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, for her efforts as a TA in Karl Campbell's class.
