The 9/11 Memorial Workout, led by App State Army ROTC, brought our University and Community together to honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who responded on September 11, 2001.

Over 130 participants marked the date at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Also represented were Watauga High School JROTC, Watauga Emergency Services, Watauga Office of the Commissioner, App State Administration, App State Athletics, App’s Women's Tennis Team, the Boone Fire Department, the NC State Bureau of Investigation, and the College of Fine and Applied Arts.

We remember by climbing stairs in tribute to those who entered the towers and by carrying equipment and simulated casualties across the field, reflecting the demanding and unpredictable work of that day. The variety of equipment represents a simple truth: amid chaos, ordinary people stepped forward and did whatever was needed.

Twenty-five years later, we remember those who served, those who sacrificed, and those who gave their lives. We will never forget.

Thursday is Training Day on the Mountain. App ROTC’s lab consisted of a variety of military skill training in the dirt and in the woods. Bit hotter than usual, but that is not an obstacle. The day started with group runs and a Contract Ceremony for Cadets Steinhauser and Watkins.

A busy Thursday with App State ROTC! The day began with a short Battalion Run followed by some team water-can sprints. The morning session closed out with LTC Jones contracting Jordan Crouch, Zach Hutchison, Keira Robinson and Daniel Prane. The afternoon Lab consisted of multi-station training in Drill and Ceremony, Customs/Courtesies, and proper wear of the uniform for underclassmen. The juniors worked on basic Tactics. The App ROTC Recovery Room is up and “Running”. Continuing the implementation of last semester's pilot for the Mountaineer Holistic Health & Fitness (H2F) program, which included the integration of strength & conditioning coaches, nutritionists, and a sports psychologist to increase our Cadets’ overall performance, the H2F Recovery Room is operational thanks to the assistance of App’s College of Fine and Applied Arts.

App ROTC seeks to implement the highly successful Army H2F into the ROTC/Campus setting. H2F empowers and equips Soldiers (students/cadets) to take charge of their health, fitness, and well-being to optimize their individual performance while also preventing injury or disease. Modeled after Special Forces and professional/collegiate athletics, the H2F System moves away from a one-size-fits-all model and acknowledges every Soldier (student/cadet) is unique.

H2F takes a holistic approach to fitness by addressing five readiness domains (physical, mental, nutrition, sleep, and spiritual), understanding that each domain impacts the others, so we need to educate our Soldiers (student/cadet) and provide them with the resources needed to maximize their performance. Three to Serve and Lead! App State ROTC Commissioned three Officers today. 2LT Daniel Benei Commissioned as a Military Police Officer on Active Duty. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics. 2LT Seth Burnham Commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer in the North Carolina National Guard. He graduated with a Bachelor in Computer Science. 2LT DJ Poteat Commissioned as a Military Intelligence Officer in the North Carolina Army National Guard. He Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. LTC Jones, Professor of Military Science, presided over the ceremony and administered the Oath of Office after family members pinned the 2LT insignia on their loved ones. He also accompanied the three soon-to-be Lieutenants on a run up to Howard’s K**b for a pre-ceremony morning view of the town of Boone. The three Second Lieutenants join 12 of their classmates who Commissioned in May. Four more will follow in December. Service and Leadership.

First Day of Physical Fitness on the Mountain and the Information Lab. Those new to the Mountain found out that 3333 feet of elevation in Kid Brewer Stadium is something different—but commitment will pay off! In the afternoon, the Professor of Military Science, LTC Jones, and Cadet Leadership discussed the Program and the semester ahead. Cadets who went above and beyond in Orientation and Move-In Parking were recognized and LTC Jones contracted Cadets Frizzelle, Benedict, Brady and Wilkerson. AIR ASSAULT! App ROTC Cadet Sage Duggin just earned her Air Assault Wings at Fort Campbell. Air Assault School trains Soldiers in Air Assault operations, sling-load operations, and rappelling. Upon completing the course, each Soldier will be able to perform the skills required to maximize the use of helicopter assets in training and combat. Cadet Duggin completed ROTC Advance Camp at Fort Knox and immediately reported to Fort Campbell’s Air Assault School. A busy summer so far! FOTM!
