Meet Ella Tynan, a senior chemistry major from Charlotte and one of our newest members of the CAS Corps!

Ella is active in the American Chemical Association, the Appalachian Chemical Society, and Tri Alpha Honor Society. Her passion for inorganic chemistry has shaped much of her academic experience, including her research in Dr. Christian Wallen’s lab, where she works on the synthesis and coordination of metal‑sulfonamidate pyridine complexes. She’s currently exploring computational modeling to understand why certain compounds aren’t binding — work that earned her the department’s Inorganic Chemistry Award last year.

Ella’s favorite place on campus is D.D. Dougherty Hall, where she serves as an SI Leader and Front Desk Assistant for the Student Learning Center. She’s found a strong sense of community through these roles and enjoys the mix of productivity, connection, and support the space offers. Outside of academics, she loves to crochet, play board and card games, spend time with friends, and hang out with her two cats, Eve and Eden.

Meet Lizzie Smith, a senior psychology major with a business concentration and a statistics minor from Cary and one of our newest members of the CAS Corps!

Lizzie is a member of Appalachian Honors and serves as the operations coordinator and a safety team member in the HR Science Club. She credits both her psychology coursework and faculty mentorship — especially from Dr. David Russell — with shaping her academic growth and helping her navigate her thesis with confidence and clarity.

Lizzie’s favorite place on campus is the Solarium, where she studies, relaxes, and enjoys the steady soundtrack of piano music that fills the space. Outside of academics, she loves to cook, explore new trails, read, and collect vinyl.

This semester's Veterinary Technology Speaker Series continues tomorrow with "More Than a Pet: The Human–Animal Bond & Relationship‑Centered Care" at 10 a.m. via Zoom!

For many people, animals are members of the family. This session — free and open to all — explores the human–animal bond through a veterinary social work lens, including the roles animals may play in identity, connection, coping, caregiving, and family life. Participants will consider the difference between human–animal interactions and the human–animal bond, and examine how recognizing the relationship between an animal and their person can contribute to relationship‑centered veterinary care. Real‑world examples will illustrate how understanding both ends of the leash can support animals, the people who love them, and the professionals who care for them.

Appalachian State University’s Dr. Melissa Birkhofer (English) and Dr. Paul Worley (Languages, Literatures, and Cultures) have been recognized by the Association for the Study of American Indian Literatures for their edited collection on Teresa Martín and Luisa Menéndez.

Their work brings new attention to two early accounts that help reshape how scholars understand the colonial history of the Southeast.

Meet Jose Barajas-Arias, a senior applied physics major with a mathematics minor from Pittsboro and one of our newest members of the CAS Corps!

Jose is involved in the Humane Society Club, PandA Club, and Team Sunergy. His academic interests center on thermodynamics, and he credits Dr. Leah Sherman with helping him explore the department’s opportunities and connect with mentors who have shaped his path.

Garwood Hall is Jose’s go‑to spot on campus — a place he knows well and where he spends much of his time studying and working with others in the Appalachian State University Department of Physics and Astronomy. He also enjoys soccer, bowling, and volunteering at the Watauga Humane Society.
