You may have read in the news a couple of days ago the story about the efforts in North Carolina to restore peatland before it dries up or is destroyed (see the AP article linked below).

Dr. Adam J. Benfield and Dr. Brooke Hunter are among the groups of scientists studying these critical ecosystems in NC. They are working on a grant project funded by Appalachian State University RIEEE to characterize the critical zone from hillslope to bog in the Blue Ridge Mts. Other members of their team are Drs. Jacob Warner and Dr. Kristen de Graauw in Appalachian State Department of Geography and Planning and students Ian, Josh, and David.

A huge thank you to Boone Mayor Dalton George for being the guest speaker in GES1010 yesterday. He discussed how he draws on his roles in local government and as National Organizing Director for the Endangered Species Coalition to help shape environmental policy from the local to national level. We had an amazing group of Answerspherian tutors and Outreach interns last year. Most of them graduated in May and have moved on to greener pastures to make us proud. And that means new opportunities for others looking to get involved in the department. More about applying for these paid positions and others, as well as volunteering opportunities in the first department newsletter of the year, coming out on Monday August 17th. A huge shout out to all our alumni out there who held these important roles in the past!
