Macaws

It’s Wild Wednesday again! With all of our focus this week on the success of our This Birdie Told Me book on scarlet macaws, we decided to send you a little more information as to why they are one of our favorite birds!

This scarlet macaw is Ranger, and he is an ambassador for his species at the Belize Zoo. These beautiful birds are not only intelligent, but can mimic human speech. Ranger is definitely a talker - but watch out for that beak! They can crush the hardest of seeds, and fingers!

Macaws are widespread in Central and South America, but in some regions, including Belize, they are endangered due to habitat loss.

Another interesting fact, the Belize Zoo was founded by Sharon Matola, who was very active in early conservation efforts of the scarlet macaw. That story is told in the book, The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw by Bruce Barcott - a great read!

Happy Wild Wednesday! This week we want to introduce you to a species that we literally stumbled upon on our last Belize trip - the Hernandez’s Helmeted Basilisk!

As we were walking through 5 Blue Lakes National Park ( Five Blues Lake National Park, FBLNP ) with the local rangers, this small lizard (its body was about 3 inches) jumped into the underbrush. Luckily, Eric had his camera ready and snapped these amazing pictures. We had never seen this species before, so we asked our friends at the Savanah Field Station ( Savanna Field Station)for some assistance and they pointed us in the right direction!

Did you know that there are 5 wild cats species species in Belize? This beauty is an ocelot and it was captured by a camera trap by our friends at Savanna Research Station in Belize.

Want to learn a little more about ocelots? Next slide please! 😁

Like jaguars, ocelots have patterns of spots and stripes that can be used to identify individuals. But unlike jaguars, ocelots are not able to roar, which means that they are not classified as a “big cat” . Still.. they are much larger than a house cat!

We have been looking back at some of the amazing photos we've accumulated over the years, both from our trail cameras and our own EdVentures in Belize. We are excited to announce the start of our new series with a puma photo from our friends at 5 Blues Lake National Park in Belize!

Pumas, also known as mountain lions in the US, and red tigers in Belize, are a frequent visitor to our trail cameras. So we are hoping that you enjoy learning more about these amazing cats!
